“2002, 2004, 2007, 2010, 2011: a blessed decade for Lascombes, which confirms its return to the highest level and seems to handle even the most challenging vintages with admirable ease (though 2010, of course, stands apart as a truly great year). The color is intense, almost black, and the nose is powerful and complex: sweet spices, licorice, black fruits, truffle, toasted almond... On the palate: dense, full-bodied, concentrated, vigorous, built on “robust yet refined” tannins with a very fine grain. A Margaux of great classicism, a perfect blend of elegance and power. Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Wine rated 18/20 (Top-rated wine)

Rated estate (2018 guide): 4 stars (Producers of the very highest quality, the pride of French viticulture)

About the wine:

It continues to develop beautifully, with the rich floral notes typical of a great Pinot Noir—long, smooth, and refined—everything one would expect from a fine Margaux.

About the estate:

The MACSF mutual insurance group, now the owner of this very important estate, is doing everything possible to ensure its prestige and quality, under the effective management of Dominique Befve. The wine, always made from very ripe grapes, possesses a fullness and smoothness rarely found in Margaux, and one should rejoice in the charm and finesse of the second wine, Chevalier-de-Lascombes, which embodies the aromatic seduction of the estate.

Rated estate (2018 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer’s wines are regularly recognized by the guide)

About the wine:

2002, 2004, 2007, 2010, 2011: a blessed decade for Lascombes, which confirms its return to the highest level and seems to handle even the most challenging vintages with admirable ease (with the obvious exception of 2010, a truly great year). The color is intense, almost black, and the nose is powerful and complex: sweet spices, licorice, black fruits, truffle, toasted almond... On the palate: dense, full-bodied, concentrated, vigorous, built on "robust yet refined" tannins with a very fine grain. A Margaux of great classicism, a perfect blend of elegance and strength.

About the estate:

Founded in the 15th century by the knight Antoine de Lascombes, acquired in 1952 by Alexis Lichine, then by the wine merchant Bass & Charrington in 1971, this estate lay dormant until its purchase in 2001 by the American investment fund Colony Capital. A major program was implemented under the direction of Dominique Befve, formerly of the Rothschild estates, to renovate this vast, fragmented 112-hectare vineyard. Lascombes, acquired in 2011 by MACSF, has now regained its former glory.

Gault & Millau Wine Guide

Guide des Vins Gault & Millau

Wine rated (2015 guide) 17/20 (Outstanding)

About the wine:

What a delight this vintage is, already ready to drink. It has a powdery texture, a characteristic noted during the en primeur tastings and confirmed in January 2014. The mouthfeel evolves into a velvety smoothness while retaining its savory, juicy quality and crisp fruitiness.

Rated estate (2018 guide) 1*Star (Up-and-coming stars or quality winemakers producing wines of a high standard—you won’t be disappointed when tasting the wines from these estates)

About the estate:

Having come under the control of the healthcare professionals' mutual insurance company, MACSF, in 2011, Lascombes has regained its stability and can now look to the future. The new owner makes no secret of his ambition to elevate Lascombes to the level of a very good second growth. Under the direction of Dominique Befve, the estate has already made significant progress in recent years, taking another step forward in the early 2010s. It is now consistently excellent.
