Guide Hachette des vins
Rated estate (2021 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer’s wines are regularly recognized by the guide)
About the estate:
Legend has it that during a trip to France in 1814, British General Charles Palmer fell under the spell of Marie de Gascq, who was seeking a buyer for her Médoc wine. Palmer was born. Next came the Pereire brothers in 1853, influential bankers who built the current château and expanded the vineyard; then, starting in 1938, the Mähler-Besse, Sichel, Miailhe, and Ginestet families (only the first two remain today). Managed since 2004 by Thomas Duroux, this Third Growth, often considered a “super-second,” spans 66 hectares across the rolling hills of Cantenac.

About the wine:
The 2019 vintage marks one of Palmer’s greatest achievements: a wine of truly impressive purity and brilliance. On the palate, it shines with juicy fruit; the body is supple, and the finish is as silky as can be. A real treat.
About the estate:
Along with Château Margaux, Palmer is the other great star of an appellation that is all too often inconsistent. Its style, characterized by opulence and roundness, with a magnificent silkiness, is nevertheless very different from that of its neighbor. The explanation lies primarily in the difference in grape varieties (and thus terroir) between the two estates. Château Palmer is thus one of the Médoc’s classified growths to include the highest proportion of Merlot in its final blend (around 50%). Palmer has cemented its legendary status by producing some absolutely sumptuous wines: the 1961, 1983, and 1989 vintages remain essential benchmarks. Now owned by the heirs of two prominent families, the Mähler-Besses and the Sichels, Palmer is led by the brilliant Thomas Duroux, who has taken the latest vintages to the pinnacle of excellence. It has been certified biodynamic since 2018.

Wine rated (2022 guide) 98/100
About the wine:
This is a very refined wine with a robust structure that is softened by the generous notes of black fruit. It is very well-balanced and smooth, with a velvety texture behind its powerful tannins. This wine has the potential to age for many years. Best enjoyed starting in 2028. Organic and biodynamic.
Vinous
Wine rated (2022 guide) 98/100
About the wine:
The 2019 Palmer is a truly special wine, but it will need a few years to reach its peak. Dense and opulent, with explosive energy, the 2019 boasts a tremendous richness of dark fruit. As always, the blend includes a high percentage of Merlot (43%), which complements the Cabernet’s flavor so well. Thomas Duroux and his team have crafted another absolutely compelling Palmer in 2019. 2029–2069
James Suckling
Wine rated (2021 guide) 99/100
About the wine:
The nose is filled with notes of sweet tobacco, stone, bramble, and blackcurrant. The palate is full-bodied and compact, with very polished yet firm and robust tannins that carry through the entire length and breadth of the wine. Energetic acidity. Very structured and powerful, yet agile and impressive. A historic sensation. Made from biodynamically grown grapes. It needs at least 6 years of bottle aging to soften. Try after 2027.
Yves Beck
Wine rated (2021 guide) 98/100
About the wine:
The Palmer’s bouquet displays its characteristic finesse and subtlety. It is composed of numerous facets expressed through subtle fruity nuances. The palate is smooth and slightly creamy. It follows the style of many Left Bank wines; indeed, with a discreet attack, the wine unfolds across the palate and highlights its tannins on the very finish. These tannins are powerful yet refined, highlighting the greatness of the 2019 vintage. This Palmer is certainly destined for long-term aging. It shines with its balance, delicacy, and precision. 2027–2060
