Owned by the Cuvelier family since 2008 (who also own Clos Fourtet in Saint-Émilion), this vineyard—with its deep gravel soils on the Grand Poujeaux plateau—benefits from exceptional terroirs as well as state-of-the-art facilities. Under the guidance of Stéphane Derenoncourt, it produces one of the finest Moulis wines available, both rich and exceptionally smooth.

About the estate:

Although omitted from the 1855 classification—as Moulis had long been a region devoted to grain farming—this vineyard is nonetheless among the most renowned in the Médoc. A former seigneury under the jurisdiction of Latour Saint-Maubert—later Château Latour—it experienced a resurgence in the 1920s under the Theil family, who consolidated the vineyard into a single 68-hectare block on the fine gravel terroir of Grand-Poujeaux and elevated the estate to the pinnacle of the appellation. Since 2008, it has been owned by Philippe Cuvelier, owner of Clos Fourtet (a First Growth of Saint-Émilion), who maintains the estate’s high standards of quality.

The nose is intense, with very distinct and luscious fruit notes. On the palate, it showcases this charming character, with body and a silky texture. One of the most well-rounded wines of recent vintages.

An iconic estate within the appellation, Poujeaux has been owned by the Cuvelier family (Clos Fourtet) since 2008. Under the leadership of its director, Christophe Labenne, and with advice from Stéphane Derenoncourt, the wines have steadily improved, reaching a solid level of quality, so much so that the estate remains a benchmark within the appellation. The style leans toward finesse and elegance, which suits the wine perfectly, though it also ages very well. The latest vintages are well worth trying.

Poujeaux 2022 is a true burst of energy. An explosion of dark red and blue fruits, cedar, pipe tobacco, incense, new leather, and licorice floods the palate. Dense, powerful, and explosive, the 2022 certainly does not go unnoticed. It captures the very essence of the vintage in a perfect balance between fruity opulence and energy. I would recommend cellaring it for at least a few years. A wine of great richness. Tasted twice. 2028–2052

This wine is very structured and tannic, yet its phenolic aromas are remarkably refined and beautifully smooth. It offers notes of blackcurrant and minerals, intertwined with fresh herbs like thyme and bay leaf. Medium-bodied, it features firm yet silky tannins and a long, intense finish. It will age magnificently. Excellent value for a wine with aging potential. Blend: 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, and 3% Petit Verdot. Wait until 2030 for it to soften.

What sets it apart is its well-crafted structure, which gives it a full-bodied character. The nose is still subtle at this stage, while the palate reveals a dense, pronounced tannic structure, a fresh framework, depth, and body. Delicate notes of roasted coffee and cooked black cherry. Excellent aging potential.

The Poujeaux bouquet is rich in detail and complexity. Hints of red berries, paired with notes of licorice and candied fruit, combine maturity with freshness. Creamy and smooth on the palate, the wine is full-bodied with firm, fine-grained tannins. Elegance takes center stage on the finish, which is fruity and lingering.
