Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Rated estate (2021 guide): 4*Stars (Producers of the very highest quality, the pride of French viticulture)

About the estate:

World-renowned for its opulence and consistency, this fifth-growth Pauillac has been owned by the Cazes family since the 1930s and has gained widespread acclaim since Jean-Michel Cazes took over its management in 1973. Following the successful handover from Jean-Michel to his son Jean-Charles, the estate has maintained all its vigor and vitality in recent vintages, retaining its depth while gaining precision in its tannins. The château produces an increasingly stylish dry white Bordeaux, but we are still awaiting a more precise wine for its second label, Écho. A new wine-making facility is under construction, and it promises to be monumental—after all, the estate must hold its own in a highly competitive world!

Wine rated (2026 guide) 96/100

About the wine:

Aromas of dried flowers, with notes of cocoa powder, mint, red berries, and sweet rose petals. Clean and crystalline, with beautiful purity, and a soft, chalky touch in the tannins that fill the mouth without overwhelming it. A style that’s quite understated for Lynch—almost delicate—with a slight hint of licorice, slate, and damp stone, accompanied by notes of blackcurrant. A lovely finish, very charming and juicy, yet overall quite refined and understated. Aging will add a bit more texture. Precise, full-bodied, chalky yet fresh. 3% Petit Verdot rounds out the blend. pH 3.68. 2033–2050

Hachette Wine Guide

Guide Hachette des vins

Rated estate (2022 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer’s wines regularly receive awards from the guide)

About the estate:

The name of this wine combines that of the Irish merchants who owned it in the 18th century with that of a hamlet located just south of Pauillac. Since the 1930s, its success has been the result of the ongoing efforts of three generations of the Cazes family: Jean-Charles, André, and Jean-Michel. The contribution of Jean-Michel, who has since passed the reins to his son Jean-Charles, has been essential. His success is linked to the quality of the wines, produced from a vast 100-hectare vineyard, as well as to a well-thought-out development strategy that includes a wine trading business and tourism infrastructure (hotel-restaurant, shops).

Rated Estate (2022 Guide) 2*Stars (These exceptional estates, often blessed with fabulous terroirs, are must-haves that, thanks to the consistency and excellence of their wines, deserve a place in the cellars of discerning wine lovers)

About the wine:

Spectacular for its depth of character and powerful attack. It consistently unfolds waves of black fruit and fresh mint, with an intense and highly expressive profile. Intense, precise, and full-bodied, it is supported by perfectly integrated tannins and leads to a juicy, very lingering finish.

About the estate:

It is now up to Jean-Charles Cazes to lead this prestigious Pauillac estate. His father, Jean-Michel—an exceptional figure in the Médoc, a tireless ambassador for Bordeaux wines, and the architect of this Fifth Growth’s reputation—is, however, never far away. The magnificent family estate, superbly situated on the Bages plateau, has produced an impressive series of wines without a single weak link since the early 1970s, establishing its rich, seductive, and immediately approachable style, while still being capable of aging gracefully. Now equipped with a spectacular, brand-new, state-of-the-art winery, the estate is more on track than ever, and its popularity among many wine enthusiasts is nothing more than a well-deserved reward.

Wine rated (2026 guide) 95-97/100

About the wine:

Clearly influenced by its aging, Lynch-Bages’ bouquet also reveals nuances of ripe black berries and praline, complemented by a hint of graphite. Creamy and slightly smooth on the palate, the wine is driven by a powerful structure. The tannins are full-bodied, firm, and fresh. A bold yet reimagined style. It seems to me that they’ve reined in the extractions, which may also be linked to a lower alcohol content than in recent years! Note that there’s still plenty of substance, but it’s part of a well-rounded whole where it doesn’t take center stage! A wine ready for long-term aging. 2030–2065
