Bettane & Desseauve
Rated estate (2016 guide) Selected (An estate or winery that impressed us with one or more of its wines, though we are unable to offer a general assessment of the style of its entire range)
About the estate:
Owned by Axa, this vineyard is ideally situated on a gravelly hilltop, with such prestigious neighbors as Pontet-Canet and d’Armailhac. With the acquisition of Château Tour Pibran in 2001, the selection of plots allowed Jean-René Matignon and the teams at Pichon-Baron to choose the best for Pibran and create a second wine.

Rated estate (2016 guide) Selected (Please note that this guide is a ranking, and as such, all the estates listed here—even those without a star—represent, in our view, the pinnacle of French winemaking.)
About the estate:
Located on the hillside between Pontet-Canet and Armailhac, Pibran was acquired by AXA Millésimes in 1987. Vinified by the excellent Jean-René Matignon of Pichon-Longueville, the wine consistently stands out among the elite of the crus bourgeois, characterized by a very classic Pauillac style that blends richness with tannic structure. Full-bodied, aromatic, and approachable early on, it ages well and with grace.
