“Fabulous aromas of blackcurrant, blueberry, crushed stone, graphite, and pencil lead. Hints of violets and other flowers as well. A full-bodied wine with incredibly enveloping tannins, whose texture is reminiscent of the finest velvet. The structure is superb, with plenty of tension and concentration. Flawless. This wine could be the new 1990, or even better. Bettane & Desseauve
Rated estate (2017 guide): 4* Stars (Producers of the very highest quality, the pride of French viticulture)
About the estate:
The estate’s flagship wine is produced directly across from Château Latour, on perfectly drained gravel soils that benefit from the microclimate of the Gironde riverbanks. Pichon possesses the vigor and power of the greatest Médoc wines, in a very pure style lovingly overseen by Jean-René Matignon, one of the most experienced technical directors in the Bordeaux region. All recent vintages are remarkable, sharing the same classic character derived from the dominant Cabernet Sauvignon and the mineral and graphite notes of the terroir. The second wine, Tourelles, has improved significantly, but the real novelty is the introduction of another wine, Griffons, in 2012, made from young vines in prime terroirs, and highly successful.

Wine rated (2023 guide) 98/100
About the wine:
Sweet and delicately aromatic, yet rich, with notes of coffee, mocha, dark chocolate, caramel, and medicinal herbs—mint and anise—combined with red, blue, and black berries. The palate has beautiful density and great weight, very tannic but broad with an airy quality that keeps it from feeling heavy at all, with vibrant juiciness and exceptional length. The tannins make the first impression with a velvety texture and chalky minerality, but they are clean, and the fruit has a crystalline purity that gives an overall elegant and direct impression. Generous, elegant, and refined, but it has not yet reached its peak. 2029–2058
Guide Hachette des vins
Rated estate (2017 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer’s wines regularly receive awards from the guide)
About the estate:
The original vineyard was established in the 17th century by Jacques de Pichon, Baron de Longueville. Divided in two in 1850, part of the estate went to Raoul de Pichon-Longueville (the other part becoming Pichon Comtesse), who had the current château built there. Inspired by the château at Azay-le-Rideau, the building contrasts with the horizontal lines of the winery built after the estate was purchased in 1987 by Axa Millésimes. The insurer undertook major renovation work there, led by Jean-Michel Cazes, then by Christian Seely, with Jean-René Matignon overseeing technical management. Since 2001, the selection policy has been intensified: only 40 hectares of the 73 that make up this exceptional terroir—composed of fine Garonne gravel and located immediately adjacent to Latour—are now used for the grand vin.

Rated estate (2017 guide): 3 stars (These represent the pinnacle of French winemaking. The finest terroirs cultivated by the greatest winemakers. Tasting their wine is always a magical experience)
About the estate:
This magnificent Second Growth has produced a series of truly stunning wines and has established itself at the very top of the Médoc hierarchy. Impossible to miss from the Château Route, the sumptuous estate of "Pichon Baron" has been completely renovated from top to bottom in less than two decades, and the team led by Christian Seely is doing exemplary work that has propelled Pichon Baron to the pinnacle of Médoc wines. The winemaking facilities and aging cellar, along with the vineyard—which has been extensively replanted—have enabled the estate to achieve a historic level of quality in recent vintages. Note that the second wine is now called Les Griffons de Pichon Baron, as Les Tourelles has become a separate brand with its own independent vineyard.

About the wine:
With a color intensity that matches the intensity of its flavor and texture, this wine coats your palate with its multiple layers of rich, dark, deep, black, and deep red fruits, combined with notes of smoke, tobacco, Cuban cigars, spices, dark chocolate, and smoldering oak. This incredible wine is perfectly balanced between power and intensity, with an almost infinite, flawless, regal, and refined finish. It is clearly one of the greatest vintages of Pichon Baron of all time. Best enjoyed between 2028 and 2065.

About the wine:
Pichon Baron 2020 is just as magnificent as it was when released en primeur. A wine of vertical intensity and explosive power, the 2020 offers an exotic blend of red and black fruits, espresso, licorice, menthol, gravel, and dried herbs. This powerful and dynamic Pauillac needs time to unfold. It combines the fruity intensity of a hot vintage with the driving energy of a cool one. The 2020 is a magnificent Pichon Baron. 2028–2050

About the wine:
The 2020 Pichon Baron was aged for 18 months in 70% new barrels and 30% one-use barrels. The vintage represents 48% of the vineyard’s 73 hectares. A wine’s character is meant to meet certain expectations. Admittedly, this is a double-edged sword, especially when dealing with a wine product where climatic and human variables are only partially predictable. Pichon Baron presents itself with its usual serenity. The oak is present, but only as an accompaniment, while classic notes of graphite and black berries quickly take the lead. The precision on display is breathtaking, almost disorienting, so clearly do we find the hallmarks that have made this wine one of the greatest in Bordeaux! Perhaps even in the universe and beyond, but we must keep our feet on the ground, and since it is there too, we might as well stay there. A dazzling wine in its maturity, its character, and, ultimately, its persistence, perfectly complemented by a refreshing and structuring acidity. A great wine for aging! 2027–2055
