Bouscaut Castle
Château Bouscaut was purchased by the Chabanneaux family at the end of the 19th century. The name Bouscaut (derived from the local place name) first appeared under their ownership around 1881, replacing the name Haut Truchon. In 1925, Victor Place and the Count of Rivaud became the owners and set out to restore the estate to its former glory. In 1961, a fire completely destroyed the château. They sold the property in 1968 to a group of New York investors who entrusted the management of the vineyard to the estate managers of Haut-Brion. Finally, Bouscaut was acquired in 1979 by Lucien Lurton. Today, the fourth generation is at the helm with Sophie Lurton, Lucien’s daughter, to whom he gave the property in 1992. Since then, Sophie, along with her husband Laurent Cogombles, has been dedicated to bringing out the best in this unique terroir.

The terroir of Château Bouscaut consists primarily of clay-gravel soils over a limestone base. The predominantly clay-limestone composition of Bouscaut’s soils gives the white wines a beautiful silky texture as well as a highly aromatic character in both Sémillon and Sauvignon. This terroir also produces white wines with great aging potential, developing notes of flowers, dried fruit, and a smoky character. These same soils also yield excellent red wines: they are particularly well-suited to Merlot. The wines of Château Bouscaut produced from these soils are deeply colored and fairly tannic, particularly rich and powerful.
