second wine

“An enticing nose that evokes the sensation of holding a basket of red berries ready to be made into jam, with hints of vegetal, herbaceous, and spring-like notes. On the palate, the elegant structure and creamy texture that characterize the first wine are just as present here, with a sophisticated finish featuring notes of chocolate.” (Le Figaro Vin 2022)

Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Wine rated (2020 guide) 93/100

About the wine:

Similar to a fine wine but in a slightly slimmer bottle, its main strengths lie in its balance and classic Bordeaux style.

Decanter

Wine rated (2022 guide) 94/100

About the wine:

Wow, blackberries and violets on the nose—so sensual, rich, and round. Beautifully fresh on the palate, with a burst of juicy red fruit and a lovely, refreshing crispness right from the start. A hint of blueberries, but there are also strawberries, raspberries, and red cherries. Supple tannins with a slightly chalky grip that coat the palate, giving it structure and body. So linear and straightforward, yet layered. Excellent!

2-Star Rating (These exceptional estates, often boasting fabulous terroirs, are must-haves that, thanks to the consistency and excellence of their wines, deserve a place in the cellars of discerning wine lovers)

About the estate:

"With its distinctive and utterly charming style, this estate—acquired in 1998 by American banker Robert Wilmers—produces a wine of unique integrity and class. Véronique Sanders, the former owner’s granddaughter, meticulously manages this classified growth on a daily basis, alongside the highly competent technical director Gabriel Vialard. She produces a harmonious and supremely balanced red wine here, respecting Bordeaux traditions without ever overdoing it in an attempt to overshadow the wines’ very natural profile. The gravelly terroir over iron-rich soil allows the wines to develop a highly seductive bouquet of morello cherries and a velvety texture unmatched in the Léognan region. It is very difficult to find fault with a single vintage: all of them, with an inimitable, long, and refined style, achieve excellence. A word of caution to overly impatient enthusiasts: like any great wine worthy of the name, Haut-Bailly can be austere in its youth. It truly reveals itself only after a few years of aging.”
