"I've never tasted a Pavie Macquin like this one, with a verticality that takes you so deep! ~ James Suckling"

"Pavie Macquin 2020 is sensational. Rich, dark, and explosive, the 2020 balances the natural richness that is the hallmark of the estate. It has a level of energy and liveliness that I haven't seen here in recent years. The result is an imposing Pavie Macquin that delivers on all its promises. In this vintage, estate manager Nicolas Thienpont did not use Cabernet Sauvignon, so the blend is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, the latter bringing aromatic presence, energy, and depth. A real Favorite " (Vinous 2022) - Delivery in wooden cases is available for orders of 6 bottles of this wine (depending on the country and shipping method selected).

Rated estate (2018 guide) 4 stars (Producers of very high quality, those who are the pride of French vineyards)

About the estate:

Pavie-Macquin, located right next to Troplong-Mondot, has just been awarded Premier Grand Cru Classé status. Stéphane Derenoncourt and Nicolas Thienpont know how to bring out the best in the terroir while giving it a modern twist, adapted to the tastes of today's consumers. Very full-bodied and fleshy, Pavie-Macquin wine gains in finesse and harmony with each new vintage, with the inimitable truffle flavor and mineral tension characteristic of the Pavie hillside.

Wine rating (2024 guide) 3*Coup de Coeur (Exceptional wine)

About wine:

What a beautiful aroma! Although still young, this vintage opens with delicate notes of black fruit and violet, supported by a slight woody touch. The palate, with its beautiful dimension and great energy, accurately reflects the limestone character of its terroir, and we fully appreciate its long, complex and deep profile, enhanced by a hint of menthol. A superb wine that will age beautifully over the next two decades. A resounding success for Nicolas Thienpont, who also wins a Favorite Larcis-Ducasse. 2028-2043

Rated estate (2018 guide) 2 stars (These very large estates, often blessed with fabulous terroirs, are must-haves which, thanks to their consistency and the excellence of their production, deserve a place in the cellars of discerning wine lovers).

About the estate:

A new, understated reception room, made entirely of glass, allows visitors to enjoy a tasting with a breathtaking view of the village of Saint-Emilion. Pavie-Macquin retained its status as a premier grand cru classé in the latest Saint-Emilion classification in 2012. This is a fitting reward for the remarkable work carried out at the château by its manager, Nicolas Thienpont, and his advisor Stéphane Derenoncourt. Since the late 1990s, this duo has transformed the estate, drawing heavily on biodynamic principles (though not certified). Their hard work has been rewarded with a series of fantastic wines, combining magnificent fruit intensity with great depth on the palate. These wines stand out from their neighbors Pavie and Pavie Decesse with a style that is both more restrained and more supple, with deep but always very lively fruit. A sure bet well known to enthusiasts, Pavie-Macquin has not put a foot wrong in recent years.

About wine:

I have never tasted a Pavie Macquin like this one. It is so fresh and lively, with notes of black cherry, blackcurrant, raspberry, and citrus. There are also hints of minerals and spices, as well as salt. The palate is full and linear, with a verticality that takes you so deep and long. Endless. Transparent. Drink after 2028.

About wine:

In addition to the usual mineral notes (chalky nuances, hints of graphite), Pavie Maquin's bouquet reveals many facets with aromas of morello cherries and elderflower, as well as notes of Sichuan pepper. Juicy and lively on the palate, the wine displays tight tannins in harmony with an incisive structure. The wine thus combines tension and fullness. It is powerful yet refined, displaying not only great aging potential but also exceptional freshness! 2027-2055

Vert de Vin

Wine rated (2021 guide) 98-99/100 (Jonathan Choukroun Chicheportiche)

About wine:

The nose is beautifully crafted, aromatic, racy, elegant, and offers power (with delicacy), a fine texture, a certain density (with precision), as well as a lovely multi-layered aspect and depth. There are notes of bright blackcurrant, bright boysenberry and, more subtly, juicy strawberry, combined with hints of blueberry, strawberry, violet, delicate touches of licorice stick, spices and an imperceptible hint of terroir (local biotope). The palate is fruity, fresh, mineral, elegant, nicely defined and offers deliciousness, precision, power, a lovely multi-layered aspect (delicate) and a fine grain. On the palate, this wine expresses notes of pulpy/juicy blackcurrant, bright blackberry and, more subtly, pulpy/creamy black berries combined with hints of raspberry and touches of violet, lily, sweet spices, hazelnut, subtle hints of graphite, orange, vanilla, and an imperceptible hint of toast/chocolate. Good length. The tannins are elegant, precise, massive, and mellow. A rich wine that offers density and power while remaining delicate and elegant.

Wine rated (2023 guide) 98/100

About wine:

Deep in color, this wine has an impressive nose bursting with smoke, espresso beans, flowers, licorice, black cherries, plums, and chocolate. It is rich, full-bodied, deep, and concentrated, with layers of sensual, flamboyant, and silky fruit that express purity, depth, and complexity. The lingering finish gains intensity and ends with intriguing notes of citrus peel, red stone fruit, and dark chocolate. In a few years, this wine could be even better. Drink between 2025 and 2055.
