First Growth

“It glides between velvety and silky textures, with a finish that ranks among the most impressive of the 1er Crus! ~ B&D”

“A clean sweep for the Thienpont trio in 2019. If Larcis is the stone and Beauséjour HDL is the earth, Pavie Macquin is the sky. The nose reveals a sensual, seductive character—dare we say sexy? The extravagant, almost oriental fruit, along with notes of spice and fine oak, are enhanced by an ethereal, musky touch. The palate is taut and vibrant. This is a wine at its absolute peak, with velvety tannins propelled by incredible energy and a structure that stands tall. It is the terroir in all its splendor, with a dynamic, racy signature and wild energy. Immense. Wine rated 98/100

Rated estate (2018 guide): 4* Stars (Producers of the very highest quality, the pride of French viticulture)

About the wine:

Marble-like, complex, and built for long-term aging, this wine has gained in refinement, fruit vitality, and texture over recent vintages. Its texture ranges from velvety to silky. The fresh, deep finish is one of the most impressive among the Premier Crus.

About the estate:

Located right next to Troplong-Mondot, Pavie-Macquin has just been elevated to Premier Grand Cru Classé status. Stéphane Derenoncourt and Nicolas Thienpont know how to bring out the best of the terroir while giving it a modern style suited to the tastes of today’s consumers. Full-bodied and rich, Pavie-Macquin’s wine gains in finesse and harmony with each new vintage, featuring the inimitable truffle notes and mineral tension characteristic of the Pavie hillside.

Guide Hachette des vins

Wine noted (guide 2023) 2* Favorite (Remarkable wine)

About the wine:

The 2019 Pavie Macquin, with nearly a quarter of Cabernet in its blend, displays great character centered on perfectly ripe, intense fruit against a backdrop of smoky oak and subtle peppery notes. On the palate, it combines power and freshness with robust yet harmonious tannins, then unfolds into a sumptuous, fruit-forward finish. A grand cru with beautiful confidence, built for long-term aging. 2026–2040

Rated estate (2018 guide) 2*Stars (These exceptional estates, often blessed with fabulous terroirs, are must-haves that, thanks to the consistency and excellence of their wines, deserve a place in the cellars of discerning wine lovers)

About the estate:

A new, minimalist tasting room, entirely made of glass, offers a breathtaking view of the village of Saint-Emilion. Pavie-Macquin retained its status as a Premier Grand Cru Classé in the latest Saint-Emilion classification in 2012. This well-deserved recognition honors the remarkable work carried out at the château by its manager, Nicolas Thienpont, and his consultant, Stéphane Derenoncourt. This duo has transformed the estate, drawing heavily on biodynamic principles (uncertified) since the late 1990s. A series of fantastic wines, combining magnificent fruit intensity with great depth on the palate, has crowned this groundwork. These wines stand out from their Pavie and Pavie Decesse counterparts with a texture that is both more restrained and more supple, a deep yet always very lively juice. A sure bet well known to connoisseurs, Pavie-Macquin has not put a foot wrong in recent years.

Wine rated (2021 guide) 97/100

About the wine:

On the nose, abundant notes of roses and dark fruits, such as blackberry and blackcurrant. Full-bodied yet tight and balanced, with real concentration and great structure, and flawless tannins that carry through the entire length of the wine. Minerality and persistence, all with a refreshing quality. This is a very serious wine for the vintage and for the cellar. Best enjoyed after 2025.

Wine rated (2020 guide) 99/100

About the wine:

The Thienpont trio had a stellar 2019. This is a wine at its absolute peak, with velvety tannins propelled by incredible energy and a structure that soars with verticality. It is the terroir in all its splendor, with a dynamic, racy signature and wild energy. Immense.

Wine Green

Vert de Vin

Wine rated (2021 guide) 98/100 (Jonathan Choukroun Chicheportiche)

About the wine:

The nose is perfectly balanced and refined, elegantly racy, aromatic, complex, and deep, offering power combined with finesse and a racy limestone character. It features notes of Sichuan pepper, blackcurrant, and, more subtly, wild blackberry, combined with hints of red berries, lilac, subtle hints of fleshy plum, a sense of place, as well as a subtle hint of star anise and a discreet, almost roasted-herb note. The palate is fruity, balanced, elegant, and refined, offering precision, juiciness, a certain density with finesse, clarity, freshness, a tangy structure, and a lovely combination of finesse and power in the texture. This wine displays great delicacy, mastery, and a distinct sense of terroir. On the palate, this wine expresses notes of juicy, pulpy blackberry, juicy blackcurrant, and a lighter hint of violet, combined with touches of purple plum, wild raspberry, as well as subtle hints of tonka bean, blueberry, licorice, vanilla, and a subtle, almost sage-like note in the background. The tannins are elegant, precise, and delicate. Good length.

Wine rated (2022 guide) 97/100

About the wine:

Full-bodied, concentrated, and bursting with ripe, extremely ripe fruit. Intoxicating notes of black fruit, flowers, spices, mocha, and smoke. Long, opulent, rich, and supple, it combines density, elegance, length, and complexity, making for a thrilling tasting experience. The finish is long and grows more complex as it lingers. Best enjoyed between 2025 and 2047.
