Bettane & Desseauve
Wine rated 18/20 (Benchmark wine)
Rated estate (2021 guide): 5*Stars (Exceptional producers who represent the absolute pinnacle of quality in France and around the world)
About the wine:
A distinguished, full-bodied nose, well-defined from its initial woody notes, with a full body, harmonious tannins, and the true essence of a great wine—yet still affordable for lovers of fine Médoc wines.
About the estate:
The estate belonged to the Charmolüe family for over a century (the family now resides in Provence, at Château Romanin). Purchased in 2005 by Martin and Olivier Bouygues, the estate has continued on its path of excellence. The new owners and their teams have taken care not to alter the style, but to refine viticulture and winemaking to adapt them to the ecological and cultural demands of our time. The second wine, Dame-de-Montrose, produced in significant quantities, has improved in consistency and in its expression of the terroir. The most recent vintages, among the finest in the Médoc, are more than a match for the First Growths.

Wine rated (2019 guide) 16,5/20 (Very good wine)
Rated estate (2021 guide): 2*Stars (These exceptional estates, often blessed with fabulous terroirs, are must-haves that, thanks to the consistency and excellence of their wines, deserve a place in the cellars of discerning wine lovers)
About the wine:
Richer, more exuberant, and more mature, the 2015 La Dame has great potential, but we'll still have to be patient for it to fully develop.
About the estate:
Entrepreneurs Martin and Olivier Bouygues have owned this famous cru classé since 2006. They have masterfully cultivated one of the Médoc’s finest terroirs, which has, on numerous occasions in the past, distinguished itself by producing wines that can match—or even surpass—the quality of the premiers grands crus classés. In hot, dry years—such as 2003, 2009, 2010, or even 2011—Montrose offers exceptional distinction. Hervé Berland, who currently manages the estate, is elevating it to a level of definition and precision never before seen here. It is closing in on a third star.
Wine Enthusiast
Wine rated (2016 guide) 92/100
About the wine:
This wine is powerful, with refined tannins and concentrated black fruit. Its dense texture is enhanced by the acidity and the vintage’s lovely fruit. The tannins are dusty, tight, and enveloped by lovely fruit and acidity. This Montrose second wine will surely continue to develop over the next few years. Best enjoyed in 2024.
James Suckling
Wine rated (2018 guide) 94/100
About the wine:
A very refined red with notes of berries, chocolate, and nuts. Full-bodied with a round, juicy texture. Spicy and savory. Delicious even now. It will need another two or three years to reach its peak. Château Montrose’s second wine.
Le Figaro vins
Wine rated (2020 guide) 17/20
About the wine:
The color is dark, with aromas of black fruit and spicy notes. La Dame is a slender, refined wine with a touch of roundness on the mid-palate and a finish of great elegance. The reclassification of a large Cabernet plot—which had always been part of the grand vin—has been very beneficial for the second wine. The second wine accounts for 40% of production. 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot.
