About the estate:

The estate belonged to the Charmolüe family (now based in Provence, at Château Romanin) for over a century. Purchased in 2005 by Martin and Olivier Bouygues, the estate has continued on its path of excellence. The new owners and their teams have taken care not to alter the style, but rather to refine viticulture and winemaking to adapt them to the ecological and cultural demands of our time. The second wine, Dame-de-Montrose—produced in significant quantities—has improved in consistency and in its expression of the terroir. The most recent vintages, among the finest in the Médoc, more than hold their own against the First Growths.

About the wine:

The remarkable 2021 Montrose is my contender for the title of “Wine of the Vintage” in the Médoc. As it pours from the glass, it releases a deep bouquet of blackcurrant and dark fruits, intertwined with subtle notes of mint, orange, pencil lead, and spices. Beautifully full-bodied, it is concentrated with a complex and rich fruit core, supported by ripe and refined tannins. Its long and lingering finish transcends the limitations of the vintage. This young classic, which is reminiscent of the estate’s 1996 vintage but far superior, is a blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot. 2031–2065

They have masterfully cultivated one of the Médoc’s finest terroirs, which has repeatedly distinguished itself in the past by producing wines that can reach—or even surpass—the level of the First Growths. In hot, dry years—such as 2003, 2009, 2010, or even 2011—Montrose offers exceptional distinction. Hervé Berland, who now manages the estate, is taking it to a level of definition and precision never before seen here. It is approaching a third star.

Montrose 2021 is a deep and intense wine—a classic Montrose, in short, whose intensity has been slightly tempered by the coolness of the growing season. Spices, tobacco, cedar, menthol, burnt earth, gravel, and a hint of new oak unfold over time, but the 2021 is a wine that requires extensive cellar aging to reach its full potential. After all, it’s a Montrose. Here, elegance meets power. Best enjoyed between 2031 and 2051.
