Château Cap Saint-Georges Saint-Émilion 2019

From the terrace at Cap Saint Georges, one looks out over the 19 hectares that make up Jean-Philippe Janoueix’s estate. The vines stretch all the way to the stone walls in perfect rows, a sight accentuated by their due south orientation. The first vintages from this new estate are rich and spicy.

The son of Jean-François Janoueix, Jean-Philippe Janoueix first settled in Lalande before founding Château La Confession in 2001 as a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru, a merger of Château Haut-Pontet (which became the second wine) and Château Barreau. He also produces Saint-Georges-Saint-Émilion, Pomerol, and Bordeaux Supérieur.

Subtly fruity, Cap St-George’s bouquet also reveals hints of tobacco and pepper. Its terroir lends it a refreshing liveliness with a crisp, juicy quality. What character! A wine to watch as it matures. Beautiful tannic structure. 2024–2037

The nose is fruity and offers refined power, intensity, and a fine texture. It features notes of pulpy, juicy blackcurrant and strawberry, along with more subtle hints of violet, combined with touches of blueberry, raspberry, and lily, as well as hints of zan, sweet blond tobacco, and a subtle hint of Sichuan pepper. The palate is fruity and fresh, with a crisp structure, fine texture, and roundness. On the palate, this wine expresses notes of juicy blackcurrant, blackberry, and, to a lesser extent, blueberry, combined with hints of blueberry, raspberry, and a touch of Sichuan pepper. The tannins are structuring and refined.
