Saint-Georges Saint-Emilion
The Saint-Georges Saint-Emilion appellation is one of the so-called "satellite" appellations of Saint-Emilion, and owes its name to Château Saint-Georges, which overlooks the vineyards. The Saint-Georges Saint-Emilion vineyard covers approximately 185 hectares—a relatively modest size for the region—and is located north of Saint-Émilion, on the right bank of the Barbanne River. The Saint-Georges-Saint-Emilion wine appellation is part of the Montagne vineyard, within the Montagne-Saint-Emilion appellation. Winemakers have the option of claiming either of these appellations. Production in this appellation is thus limited to approximately 8,800 hectoliters per year.
Bordering the territory of Saint-Émilion to the north, the Saint-Georges-Saint-Émilion appellation is unique in that it features clay-limestone soils with a very homogeneous composition throughout its entire wine-growing area. These soils rest on a layer of pure, porous limestone. Acting like a sponge, this limestone substrate consistently releases water to the vines, even during very dry summers. Furthermore, the gentle slope of the terrain ensures perfect drainage of the vineyard. The geography of the production area provides a southern exposure that favors generous sunshine for optimal grape ripening.
The wines of Saint-Georges Saint-Emilion are red and produced from Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes grown on clay-limestone soils. On the palate, the wines are tannic and powerful, with a certain roundness provided by the Merlot, the primary grape in the blend. The tannins, derived from its partner Cabernet Franc, are particularly pleasant. They are distinctly present but very fine and well-integrated. These same tannins give Saint-Georges Saint-Emilion excellent aging potential , much like Château Tour du Pas Saint-Georges.
