Saint-Georges Saint-Emilion
The Saint-Georges Saint-Emilion appellation is one of Saint-Emilion's "satellite" appellations, and owes its name to the Château Saint-Georges, which overlooks the vineyard. The Saint-Georges Saint-Emilion vineyard covers around 185 hectares, which is fairly modest for the region, and is located in the northern extension of Saint-Émilion, on the right bank of the Barbanne river. The Saint-Georges-Saint-Emilion wine appellation is included in the Montagne vineyard, in the Montagne-Saint-Emilion appellation. Winegrowers can choose to claim either of these appellations. Production of this appellation is thus limited to around 8,800 hectoliters per year.
Bordering the Saint-Emilion territory to the north, the Saint-Georges Saint-Emilion appellation is unique in that it has clay-limestone soils with a very homogeneous composition throughout its wine-growing area. These soils rest on a layer of pure, porous limestone. Acting like a sponge, this limestone substrate regularly releases water to the vines, even during very dry summers. In addition, the gentle slope of the land ensures perfect drainage of the vineyard. The geography of the production area provides southern exposure, promoting generous sunshine for optimal ripening of the grapes.
The wines of Saint-Georges Saint-Emilion are red and produced from Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes grown on clay-limestone soils. On the palate, the wines are tannic and powerful, with a certain roundness provided by Merlot, the main grape variety in the blend. The tannins, derived from its partner Cabernet Franc, are particularly pleasant. They are very present, but very fine and smooth. These same tannins give Saint-Georges Saint-Emilion excellent aging potential , as exemplified by Château Tour du Pas Saint-Georges.
