Rating from the Hachette Wine Guide: 2** (Remarkable Wine) + Editor’s Choice
“The nose openly reveals notes of ripe red and black fruits, combined with pleasant oak. Philippe Huguenot chose to age his wine for eighteen months in new barrels, and it has retained their character. The attack is intense, immediately generous, yet never heavy. The palate is alternately tender, rich, and indulgent. It delights with its concentration and complexity. The whole is supported by balanced, already mellow tannins.” ( Le Guide Hachette des vins 2012)

Rated 3 stars (A high-quality product that serves as a benchmark in its sector)

About the estate:

Philippe Huguenot is a pragmatist. Certified organic since 2013, he adopted this approach to help his vines regain the hardiness he felt they had lost. Mechanical harvesting has also been abandoned. This estate is moving forward, and its wines are becoming increasingly elegant, with a pleasant fruitiness that is appealing even in their early years; the improvement in quality has been spectacular over the past few vintages. A man of rare kindness whose wines reflect his character, he enjoys welcoming guests to the cellar at a time when many others have closed their doors in the face of commercial success. The quality here is particularly consistent and reliable.

About the estate:

Since 1790, ten generations have succeeded one another on this 21-hectare estate, renowned for its Marsannay, Gevrey, and Fixin wines. Philippe Huguenot took over from his father, Jean-Louis, in 1996 and began the transition to organic farming (certified in 2013).

Rated estate (2023 guide) Selected (Please note that this guide is a ranking, and as such, all the estates listed here—even those without a star—represent, in our view, the pinnacle of French winemaking.)

About the estate:

The heir to a lineage of some ten generations of winemakers based in Marsannay, Jean-Louis Huguenot, who passed away in 2019, produced technically flawless wines for many years. His son Philippe and his wife Valérie, who are more low-key, have succeeded in giving the wines more personality without compromising their fundamental qualities. The entire range features precise and robust wines, which have regained organic certification since 2019; however, overly assertive aging diminishes the nuances of the terroir’s expression, resulting in dry finishes. We hope that Philippe Huguenot, now fully in charge, will evolve this style. Major renovations of the winery and buildings are currently underway.

Deep color for a Pinot Noir. Intense aroma of red fruits. Full-bodied, long, and well-balanced on the palate

An excellent wine from the Côte de Nuits. It holds its own against a Gevrey-Chambertin

Having discovered this appellation just three or four years ago, I bought this wine and found that it captured quite well what had first appealed to me during my initial tasting: fullness, roundness, and fruit. A real treat.
