“A powerful and aromatic Marsannay—the perfect accompaniment to a lovely cheese platter...”

“Lively floral aromas of cherries, blood oranges, violets, and blueberries. The palate is lively and juicy, with fine tannins and a round texture supported by crisp acidity. Great liveliness and tension, with a hint of minerality. Drink now or cellar.” (James Suckling 2025).

Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Rated 3 stars (A high-quality product that serves as a benchmark in its sector)

About the estate:

Philippe Huguenot is a pragmatist. Certified organic since 2013, he adopted this approach to help his vines regain the hardiness he felt they had lost. Mechanical harvesting has also been phased out. This estate is moving forward, and its wines are becoming increasingly elegant, with a pleasant fruitiness that captivates even in their early years; the improvement in quality has been spectacular over the past few vintages. A man of rare kindness whose wines reflect his character, he enjoys welcoming guests to the cellar at a time when many others have closed their doors in the face of commercial success. The quality here is particularly consistent and reliable.

About the estate:

Since 1790, ten generations have managed this 21-hectare estate, renowned for its Marsannay, Gevrey, and Fixin wines. Philippe Huguenot took over from his father, Jean-Louis, in 1996 and began the transition to organic farming (certified in 2013).

Rated Estate (2023 Guide) Selected (Please note that this guide is a ranking, and as such, all the estates listed here—even those without a star—represent, in our view, the pinnacle of French winemaking.)

About the estate:

A descendant of some ten generations of winemakers based in Marsannay, Jean-Louis Huguenot, who passed away in 2019, produced technically flawless wines for many years. His son Philippe and his wife Valérie, who are more low-key, have succeeded in giving the wines more personality without compromising their fundamental qualities. The entire range features precise and robust wines, which have regained organic certification since 2019; however, overly assertive aging styles diminish the nuances of terroir expression, resulting in dry finishes. We hope that Philippe Huguenot, now fully in charge, will evolve this style. Major renovation work on the winery and buildings is currently underway.
