"A rare and original vintage for this beautiful rosé with character."

The village of Vertus is unique in the Côte des Blancs in that it is home to a historic Pinot Noir plantation. Here, it is blended with a little Pinot Gris by Pierre and Sophie Larmandier, two pillars of the Côte des Blancs, to produce a striking rosé de saignée (obtained by macerating Pinot Noir skins in the juice at the time of pressing) with aromas of cherry and red fruits. Absolutely bursting with nuances of strawberries and flowers, it nevertheless manages to retain a linear and concentrated energy as well as a supple texture that is quite unusual for the style. A unique feature of the Côte des Blancs." (Decanter 2024).

Rated estate (2026 guide) 4 stars (Producers of very high quality, those who are the pride of French vineyards)

About the estate:

Pierre and Sophie Larmandier, accompanied by their son Arthur, have been cultivating 16 hectares biodynamically for over twenty years. Few wine estates, across all regions, can boast such consistency at this high level. The range is remarkably well maintained and offered at reasonable prices. Among the estate's legendary vintages, Vieille Vigne du Levant is undoubtedly a benchmark for the Côte des Blancs. The style boasts creamy textures where balance is a central value. This discreet elegance often reveals the very best that the Côte des Blancs has to offer. A highly sought-after address.

Wine rating (2023 guide) 91/100 (Outstanding wine)

About wine:

Larmandier's NV Rosé de Saignée Premier Cru Extra Brut, based on the 2020 vintage, was disgorged in November 2022 with a dosage of two grams per liter, and is one of the deepest and most saturated versions of this cuvée to date. Offering aromas of wild plums, sweet berries, and petals, it is medium-bodied to full-bodied, fleshy and vinous, with a deep fruity core and a rich, decidedly gastronomic profile.

Wine rated (2024 guide) 93/100

Rated estate (2026 guide) 2 stars (These very large estates, often blessed with fabulous terroirs, are must-haves which, thanks to their consistency and the excellence of their production, deserve a place in the cellars of discerning wine lovers).

About wine:

A lovely fruit with notes of hibiscus and bouquet of roses. This is one of the finest Rosé de Saignée wines we have tasted. On the palate, the juice is full-bodied with a caressing mousse and no harsh tannins.

About the estate:

Although his family is originally from Cramant, Pierre Larmandier settled in Vertus and vinifies parcels spread across the grands crus of the Côte des Blancs, in Cramant (the sumptuous Vieille Vigne du Levant cuvée), Chouilly, Oger, and Avize. The result has been a magnificent Les Chemins d'Avize since 2009. Stainless steel and barrels have given way to oak casks in which the wines are vinified without yeast. The range showcases the hard work carried out in the vineyard (certified biodynamic).

About wine:

Grown on Vertus soils with a deeper topsoil layer containing clay, Champagne Rosé De Saignée NV has a saturated pink hue and is highly aromatic, opening with ripe aromas of black cherry, crushed flowers, and a salty note. Made from 90% Pinot Noir and the remainder Pinot Gris, from the 2020 vintage (but not labeled as 2020 because it has not been aged long enough), it is full-bodied and juicy on the palate, with accessible fruitiness and a salinity that ties it together nicely. It is ripe and long on the palate, with a clean finish and lively mousse. With a well-ripened tannic structure, a mellow texture, and notes of nectarine and blood orange on the finish, this is a very nice wine to enjoy over the next 10 years.

Six years in the cellar since purchase in December 2016. Opened today, May 15, 2022. What a fabulous champagne, rosé de saignée, with aromas of candied fruit and honey. The taste buds detect smoked candied cherries, the finesse of the bubbles expresses a moving galaxy, a superb spectacle of effervescence within a golden pink hue and, finally, an extraordinarily long finish. A very, very great champagne, congratulations to this estate for this moment of pleasure in discovering it. Bravo to all those who contributed to this result.

Disappointed because I found it rather bland, as if it had gone off. A little expensive for a bottle that neither thrilled nor impressed me.

I bought this champagne (2) for my daughter, who is a fan of rosé, but I'm not. We drank a bottle on her birthday, and I was frankly disappointed. Its color is magnificent, but the rest is dull. It seems like champagne that is too old (it is not vintage), even though it was stored in a cellar. We'll see about the second bottle...
