Vallée de Leyda
The Leyda Valley is a wine-growing subregion within the San Antonio Valley. Located between the city of San Antonio and Santiago, the capital of Chile, this Protected Designation of Origin is one of the country’s youngest wine-growing regions.
Previously specializing in wheat and barley production, it wasn’t until the 1990s that the (very) high potential of the Leyda Valley has been discovered. It has grown very quickly and still has great potential.
The climate here is cool and oceanic. The region is swept by breezes from the Pacific Ocean and regularly experiences morning fog. Dotted with hills, the landscape enjoys ample sunshine, and the significant temperature variation between warm days and cool nights provides ideal conditions for vine growth. The soils consist of clay and silt over a granite base. The Leyda Valley has fairly dry soils, so a pipeline from the Maipo River brings water to ensure adequate irrigation for the vines.
Wines from the Leyda Valleyare generally made from a single grape variety and are often described as full-bodied and complex. The region’s signature grape variety is Sauvignon Blanc (accounting for 45% of the vineyard area), complemented mainly by Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
