Vallée de Leyda
The Leyda Valley is a wine-growing sub-region attached to the San Antonio Valley. Located between the city of San Antonio and Santiago, the capital of Chile, this protected designation of origin is one of the youngest wine-growing regions in the country.
Previously specializing in wheat and barley production, it was not until the 1990s that the (very) high potential of Leyda Valley has been discovered. It has developed very quickly and still has great potential.
The climate is cool and oceanic. The region is swept by breezes from the Pacific Ocean and regularly experiences morning fog. Dotted with hills, the landscape provides good sunshine, and the wide temperature range between hot days and cool nights creates ideal conditions for vine growth. The soils are clay and silt on a granite base. The Leyda Valley has fairly dry soils, so a pipeline from the Maipo River carries water to provide sufficient irrigation for the vines.
The wines of the Leyda Valleyare generally single-varietal and are often described as structured and complex. The region's flagship grape variety is Sauvignon Blanc (45% of the vineyard area), supplemented mainly by Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
