Casas De Bucalemu
Casas de Bucalemu is a small family-owned Chilean estate. Although it was established in 2008, its roots go back much further: the first vines were planted on the land in 1631, and the estate still has vines that are several hundred years old.
The Bucalemu estate was one of the largest encomiendas in Chile during the colonial period, then became the property of the Jesuits before their expulsion from Chile in 1778. It has belonged to the same family for over two centuries now!
Horses are an integral part of Chilean culture and the history of the hacienda, so it is no surprise to find a racehorse breeding farm and a rodeo arena on the Casas de Bucalemu estate.
In this rolling valley,Casas de Bucalemu isthe closest vineyard to the ocean in the entire appellation, being only 9km from the Pacific Ocean. The vines are organically farmed and benefit from an ideal climate.
The soils are oceanic, composed of fossils and rocks that provide specific nutrients and minerals. A top layer of clay and stones from the Andes Mountains completes the picture. This rich terroir gives the wines a splendid and characteristic mineral note.
Cement eggs and oak casks are used in a meticulous winemaking process where as little intervention as possible is made in the wine.
Two wines are produced from the small production of Casas de Bucalemu :
- Salinas (referring to the Bucalemu salt flats , which during colonial times were the only source of salt for the city of Santiago and its surroundings)
- Fosiles (referring to the rich maritime soils on which the vines grow)
