Casas De Bucalemu
Casas de Bucalemu is a small Chilean family estate. Although established in 2008, it has much deeper roots: the first vines on the land were planted here in 1631, and the estate still boasts centuries-old vines within its walls.
The Bucalemu estate was once one of Chile's largest encomiendas during the colonial period, and was then owned by the Jesuits before they were expelled from Chile in 1778. It has remained in the same family for over 2 centuries now!
Horses are an integral part of Chilean culture and the hacienda's history, so it goes without saying that the Casas de bucalemu estate includes a racehorse farm and rodeo arena.
In this undulating valley, Casas de bucalemu is the closest vineyard to the ocean of the entire appellation, being only 9km from the Pacific Ocean. The vines are organically grown and benefit from an ideal climate.
The soils are oceanic, composed of fossils and rocks that bring nutrients and minerals particular to the soil. A top layer of clay and stones from the Andes Mountains complete the picture. This richness of terroir gives the wines a splendid, characteristic mineral note.
Cement eggs and oak casks are used in a meticulous winemaking process in which as little as possible is done to the wine.
Two wines stand out from Casas de Bucalemu 's small production:
- Salinas (in reference to the salinas of Bucalemu , which in colonial times were the only source of salt for the city of Santiago and the surrounding area)
- Fosiles (in reference to the rich maritime soils on which the vines grow)
