Casas De Bucalemu
Casas de Bucalemu is a small family-owned Chilean winery. Although it was founded in 2008, its roots run much deeper: the first vines on the land were planted in 1631, and the estate still boasts vines that are over a century old within its grounds.
The Bucalemu estate was one of the largest encomiendas in Chile during the colonial period, and later belonged to the Jesuits until their expulsion from Chile in 1778. It has been owned by the same family for over two centuries now!
Since horses are an integral part of Chilean culture and the history of the hacienda, the Casas de Bucalemu estate naturally features a racehorse breeding program and a rodeo arena.
In this rolling valley,Casas de Bucalemu isthe vineyard closest to the ocean in the entire appellation, located just 9 km from the Pacific Ocean. The vines are organically farmed and benefit from an ideal climate.
The soils are oceanic, composed of fossils and rocks that provide unique nutrients and minerals. A top layer of clay and stones from the Andes Mountains completes the picture. This rich terroir gives the wines a splendid and distinctive mineral character.
Cement eggs and oak casks are used in a meticulous winemaking process where intervention in the wine is kept to a minimum.
Two wines emerge from the small production of Casas de Bucalemu :
- Salinas (referring to the Bucalemu salt flats , which during the colonial era were the sole source of salt for the city of Santiago and its surroundings)
- Fosiles (referring to the rich maritime soils where the vines grow)
