Rias Baixas
Rías Baixas is the most important appellation in the region of Galicia, in northwestern Spain. It was granted Denominación de Origen (DO) status in 1988, although the official recognition of the terroir dates back to 1980, when the DO was established specifically for Albariño, the grape variety typical of the Rías Baixas vineyards. However, upon joining the European Union in 1986, Spain had to modify this appellation, as European legislation does not recognize protected appellations for grape varieties.
The Rías Baixas appellation is located in a geographical area characterized by lush vegetation, rich soil, and the rías—deep inlets of Atlantic waters extending inland. The climate is, of course, oceanic—cool and humid—though tempered by microclimates.
As mentioned, Albariño accounts for 90% of the grape production in the Rias Baixas DO. The white wines of the Rías Baixas appellation are dry, with lively and intense floral and fruity aromas, and a very refined, long finish. The remarkable qualities of Rías Baixas wines can be appreciated by tasting the vintages from Domaine Pazo de Galegos or Bodegas Pazo de Senorans.
