"The 2012 Viña Tondonia Reserva comes from a very dry year, with 25% less rainfall than the average (at the time), which resulted in lower yields of very healthy grapes that produced wines with a beautiful balance between alcohol and polyphenols, making them highly suitable for barrel aging. Barrel aging was slightly longer, lasting six years. The wine is aromatic with a developed, spicy, and tertiary profile (forest floor, a touch of brick dust and iodine), complex and nuanced. The palate is full-bodied and round, with polished tannins and a long, dry finish. The nose and profile of this wine are typical of Tondonia.” (Wine Advocate 2024)

Vinous
Wine rated (2023 guide) 95/100
About the wine:
The 2012 Viña Tondonia is a blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo, and Graciano, grown along the meandering Ebro River in the Rioja Alta. This garnet-colored wine reveals aromas of ash and plum marmalade, with a slightly herbaceous core and notes of woody cedar. Dry and lean, its somewhat chalky texture lingers for a long time and concludes with a compact, savory, and persistent finish. The 2012 is a magnificent old-school Rioja. 2024–2035

Rated: Recommended
About the wine:
Delicious berries, plums, iron, minerals, tobacco, ink, and blood oranges. Very bright, juicy, and well-structured, with sensational balance, a mature character, and the characteristic vibrancy of Tondonia reds. Magnificent right now.
