Yecla

Yecla is a designation of origin (DO) that has been in existence since 1975 and covers an area around the town of the same name. Located in the north of the Murcia region, the Yecla designation is nestled between those of Almansa, Alicante, and Jumilla. Vine production in this region dates back to ancient times.

Wine growing benefits from the geography of the area, between the Mediterranean and the La Mancha plateau. The soil ofthe Yecla appellation is sandy, poor in organic matter, deep, and well-drained. The climate is Mediterranean-continental, with long, hot, dry summers and mild winters, favorable for the ripening of the grapes.

The grape variety mainly used for Yecla red wines is Monastrell, complemented by a wide range of other varieties: Grenache, Tempranillo, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah. They produce full-bodied, supple and balanced wines. Yecla's white wines offer fruity nuances in their Airen, Merseguera, Macabeo and Malvasa varieties. The Castaño, Candela e Hijos, Lázaro del Corse and Señorío de Barahonda wineries offer fine, typical examples of Yecla wines.
