Yecla

Yecla is a wine region that has held Denominación de Origen (DO) status since 1975 and covers an area surrounding the town of the same name. Located in the northern part of the Murcia region, the Yecla wine region is nestled between the wine regions of Almansa, Alicante, and Jumilla. Wine production in this region dates back to ancient times.

Winegrowing benefits from the region’s geography, situated between the Mediterranean and the La Mancha plateau. The soil inthe Yecla appellation is sandy, low in organic matter, deep, and well-drained. The climate is Mediterranean-continental, with long, hot, and dry summers and mild winters that are favorable for grape ripening.

The primary grape variety used for Yecla’s red wines is Monastrell, complemented by a wide range of other varieties: Grenache, Tempranillo, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah. These produce full-bodied, supple, and well-balanced wines. Yecla’s white wines offer fruity nuances in varieties such as Airen, Merseguera, Macabeo, and Malvasa. The wineries Castaño, Candela e Hijos, Lázaro del Corse, and Señorio de Barahonda offer fine, typical examples of Yecla wines.
