"It is nuanced, with increased complexity due to its more advanced age, more developed, subtle, and refined." (Wine Advocate)

Straight from the Jurassic marl, a pure Savagnin aged for three years in barrels under a veil. Clad in gold, you can tell it's a prince. There is nothing ostentatious about its approach; everything is delicate and restrained. Slightly toasted, the nose is distinctive. With its beautiful texture, the palate is pleasant from start to finish, without any harshness. A wine for contemplation." (Le Guide Hachette 2026)

Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Winery rated 2 stars (A serious and recommendable production, but a little more consistent and uniform than the previous one)

About the estate:

The estate overlooks Château-Chalon, perched on a rocky outcrop at an altitude of 450 meters. Jean has passed the baton to his daughter Hélène, who came to take over after a first career as a translator in Brussels, and ensure the smooth running of the 15 hectares. Certified organic since 2013, the wines are among the vineyard's successes, particularly the voile wines, which are the estate's great specialty. The yellow wines (4.5 hectares in Château-Chalon) are aged in magnificent vaulted cellars.

About wine:

Straight from the Jurassic marl soils, this pure Savagnin has been aged for three years in barrels under a veil. Clad in gold, you can tell it's a prince. There is nothing ostentatious about its approach; everything is delicate and restrained. Slightly toasted, the nose is distinctive. With its beautiful texture, the palate is pleasant from start to finish, without any harshness. A wine for contemplation.

About the estate:

Established in 1985 by Jean Berthet-Bondet, former mayor of Château-Chalon and agricultural engineer, as is his wife. Cultivated according to organic farming principles, the 13 hectares of vineyards and vaulted cellars have been managed by their daughter Hélène since 2018.

About wine:

I tasted the 2019 Côtes du Jura Savagnin again, a year marked by a late frost on May 12, but after that, the weather was hot and dry, resulting in concentrated wines. It has notes of apple, cheese rind, spices, and nuts, and seems to show slight oxidation; it is nuanced, with increased complexity due to its more advanced age, more developed, subtle, and refined. It has 14% alcohol and is full-bodied. This is a second bottling from 2019. The 2020 will be bottled now, after five years of aging under veil. I also tasted the 1999, which came from an open bottle showing slight oxidation, but the palate was fantastic.

Rated estate (2024 guide) 1*Star (Up-and-coming stars or quality winemakers producing good-quality wines; you won't be disappointed when tasting the wines from these estates)

About the estate:

Chantal and Jean Berthet-Bondet, both agricultural engineers, left the city in 1985 to create this 11-hectare estate, located equally in the Château-Chalon and Côtes du Jura appellations, and certified organic since 2013. Jean's daughter Hélène is now at the helm. The quality is improving in terms of expression and purity of fruit. New vintages and labels for ouillé wines have been cleverly redefined, although the vintages aged under veil remain the undisputed stars of the estate, with a Château-Chalon that could serve as a model for the prestigious appellation.
