Côtes du Jura
Established by a decree dated July 31, 1937, the Côtes du Jura appellation is the largest of the Jura appellations. The Côtes du Jura AOC stretches from the northern to the southern part of the wine region, giving it a wide variety of contrasting terroirs. As such, it offers a wealth of opportunities to discover the diverse expressions of Jura grape varieties. The terroir of Côtes du Jura wines now covers a total area of 640 hectares of vineyards spread across 105 communes.
The vineyards of the Côtes du Jura generally face southwest, west, and even south, sometimes situated on slopes ranging from 10 to 40%. The Côtes du Jura vineyards are situated on stony and clayey soils at an altitude ranging from 200 to 400 meters. The subsoil is homogeneous, consisting of marl and limestone gravel. The climate is semi-continental, with distinct seasons and harsh winters.
The white wines of the Côtes du Jura are made from Chardonnay (locally known as Melon d'Arbois or Gamay Blanc) and Savagnin (locally known as Naturé). The red wines of the Côtes du Jura are made from Poulsard (locally known as Ploussard), Trousseau, and Pinot Noir (locally known as Gros Noirien or Pinot Gris). The appellation is notably represented by quality producers such as Domaine Stéphane Tissot, Domaine Ganevat, Domaine Jean Macle, and Domaine Labet.
