Château de Pennautier - Cabardès Terroirs d'Altitude rouge 2023

Over the course of twenty years, Nicolas and Miren de Lorgeril have restored the historic vineyard and the château, originally designed by Le Vau, with grounds landscaped and designed by Le Nôtre. The estate now spans 250 hectares. It produces wines across eight appellations and two IGPs, including Minervois, Saint-Chinian, Faugères, and Côtes-du-Roussillon, with the same commitment to quality as in Cabardès and unwavering consistency. Here, the wines are classic and consistent, endowed with great aromatic richness, excellent freshness—particularly in the high-altitude terroirs—and a balance that never falters. A premier destination that celebrated the 400th anniversary of the Château de Pennautier in 2022.

A vintage of remarkable consistency. Black Grenache dominates by a narrow margin in the blend of this 2023, which is stunning from start to finish. The color shimmers with ruby highlights, and the nose slowly reveals its delicious notes of ripe red berries mingled with a hint of oak. A lovely sweetness coats the smooth, velvety palate, supported by exceptionally soft tannins. A tactile, elegant Cabardès that is already a pleasure to drink.

The Lorgeril family owns six family estates in Languedoc-Roussillon, including Château de Pennautier, a “Versailles of Languedoc” built in 1620 to honor the local lords, who served as treasurers of the Estates of Languedoc; a sure bet within the Cabardès appellation. Nicolas and Miren de Lorgeril, who represent the tenth generation to manage this vast 180-hectare estate, also head a wine trading company.

In the Cabardès appellation, in the foothills of the Montagne Noire, Pennautier is a wine institution that Miren and Nicolas de Lorgeril took over about twenty years ago. By adding properties in Saint Chinian, Faugères, La Livinière, and elsewhere in Roussillon to the estate, they have developed a wide variety of cuvées. Following the advice of the Derenoncourt team, Nicolas de Lorgeril employs inspired winemaking techniques, blending grapes from plots at different altitudes and of varying ages in a complex, layered manner. Starting with the 2021 vintage, his mastery and precision have refined the character of the wines, revealing the elegance of these high-altitude terroirs.
