"A must-try for this affordably priced Cabardès—it's irresistible!"

“The standout Cabardès of the year, which earned its winemaker his first ‘ Favorite ’ and the highest rating. What made it so appealing? Its “very typical Cabardès” nose, with notes of fresh black fruit, a hint of cocoa and spices, and its charming palate—caressing on the attack, gently structured, rich with cherry, and enhanced by finely chiseled tannins. It all exudes elegance and good taste. Simply perfect.” (Le Guide Hachette 2025).

About the estate:

One of the historic estates of Cabardès, once part of the Abbey of Lagrasse. Since 1986, Anne and Frédéric Maurel have been running this vast 110-hectare organic estate, located on the rocky plateau of Conques-sur-Orbiel. Legend has it that a lucky great-grandfather originally won it in a game of chance…

Review and opinion by Mr. GILLES D. Published on 12/23/2024

With a heady character and a touch of ruggedness, this unvarnished Cabardes reveals itself to be both lively and juicy, with a full-bodied, dense texture where a highly concentrated blend of very tart fruit and intensely peppery mint intertwine on a straight, tight framework with a distinct graphite note. Firm, powerful tannins with a long, fresh finish. Pair it with a family-style dish of penne all’arrabiata or a royal couscous with harissa, which complements the Syrah’s spicy notes. Rating = 3.5.
