About the estate:

One of the historic estates of Cabardès, formerly part of Lagrasse Abbey. Anne and Frédéric Maurel have been running this vast 110-hectare organic farm on the stony plateau of Conques-sur-Orbiel since 1986. Legend has it that a lucky great-grandfather originally won it in a game of chance...

With a heady and slightly surly character, this unvarnished Cabardes is both lively and juicy with a rich, thick texture where a hyper-concentration of very tart fruits and intensely peppery mint intermingle on a straight and tight structure with a distinct graphite accent. Firm and powerful tannins, long and fresh finish. Pair with a family dish of penne all'arrabiata or a royal couscous with harissa, echoing the spicy notes of the Syrah. Rating = 3.5.
