Bettane & Desseauve
Rated estate (2016 guide): 2*Stars (A solid, recommendable offering, though slightly more consistent and uniform than the previous one)
About the estate:
Patrick Reverdy and his son Laurent are deeply attached to their Carignan vineyards, which have become a specialty of the Corbières-Boutenac terroir. This estate lies right in the heart of the designated appellation for this wine. The entry-level cuvée is a benchmark in the Corbières region. The “Romain-Pauc” cuvée—named in honor of a family ancestor—blends Carignan and Grenache vines, most of which are well over forty years old, with younger Syrah and Mourvèdre vines.

Wine rated (2016 guide) 16/20 (2013 vintage) (Very good wine)
Rated Estate (2017 Guide) Selected (Please note that this guide is a ranking, and as such, all the estates listed here—even those without a star—represent, in our view, the very best of French winemaking.)
About the estate:
Driven by a desire to showcase the unique character of the Boutenac terroir, five generations have built the reputation of this leading Corbières estate. Patrick Reverdy and his son Laurent have focused on highlighting their old Carignan vines, the backbone of their production. Vinified using carbonic maceration, Carignan makes up half of the blend for the iconic Romain Pauc cuvée. While many producers in the Corbières region are advancing rapidly, La Voulte-Gasparets has kept pace and, in recent vintages, has produced wines of consistent quality that, moreover, often age beautifully.

I’ve been buying this vintage for over 20 years, and I’ve never been disappointed. The century-old Carignan vines give this wine a texture and velvety smoothness that are truly top-notch. Apparently, this wine even outperformed a Petrus in a blind tasting—that says it all! Store it for a few years, and it will develop more body.
