Rated estate (2020 guide) 1*Star (A high-quality, recommendable wine that lives up to expectations for its appellation(s))

About the estate:

In Puissalicon, a charming little feudal village nestled between the sea and the mountains, the unique wines of Domaine des Capriers are born. The estate stretches from north to south along the Libron River. This gives it a wide variety of terroirs, ranging from the Villafranchian terraces in the north to the pink gravelly marl in the south, passing through the limestone sandstone hills. Marion and Mathieu Vergnes, a young winemaking sibling duo in love with this terroir, have taken over the family estate and produce high-quality wines there: the red Les-Larmes-d’Emma, a signature cuvée full of character; the red Rêve-de-Louis, a rich and easy-drinking wine; the new Octave cuvée, with definite potential; and the aromatic and crystal-clear Les-Larmes-d’Emma rosé. The two whites, Larmes-d’Emma (100% Viognier) and Rêve-de-Louis, are highly aromatic, well-defined, lively, and balanced.

About the estate:

Marion Kergines and her brother Mathieu Vergnes, who are self-taught but come from a family of winemakers, took over the reins of this family-owned estate (30 hectares) in 2001. In 2003, they built a new winery and began marketing their wines.

Review and comment by Mr. GILLES D. Published on July 2, 2023

My initial impression of this characterful wine was somewhat mixed—and for good reason: it strikes me as still in its prime. A direct and powerful attack, with tannins that are still tight, a substantial body that lends opulence, a solid structure without being excessive, and a fleshy, slightly dense texture that is rich in aromas of blackcurrant, menthol, and garrigue, blended with a subtle toasty note. A hint of warmth marks the vigorous, spicy, and still firm finish. The tannins will benefit from being allowed to mellow in the cellar for at least two full years. Pairs well with braised pork tenderloin in a porcini mushroom sauce or game dishes. As is, rated 3.8.
