Rated 3*Stars (A high-quality product that serves as a benchmark in its sector)

About the estate:

Frédéric Niger Van Herck, driven by a passion for wine, continues to practice biodynamic viticulture on his 21 hectares. He masterfully crafts terroir-driven wines, named according to the type of soil on which they are grown. Whether “expression-de-gneiss,” “expression-d’orthogneiss,” or “expression-de-granite,” these wines perfectly express the natural character and elegant minerality of their terroir. The top vintages absolutely must be aged in the cellar. The reds are more subdued.

About the wine:

The 2023 Granite Melon, true to its vibrant brilliance and briny character. What a delight!

About the estate:

Frédéric Niger joined the estate in 2009 and benefited from the invaluable expertise of the iconic winemaker Guy Bossard, the estate’s former owner, until 2013. Since then, Frédéric has continued the vineyard’s organic (since 1975) and biodynamic (certified in 1998) practices and is committed to winemaking that is as natural as possible. The vibrant fruit and genuine aromatic expression of his unpretentious wines reflect this approach. Beyond the delightful Muscadet wines—Classic, Granite, Orthogneiss, and Taurus—this daring winemaker experiments with twenty-eight cuvées aged in amphorae and/or large oak casks and concrete tanks. These vibrant wines take us outside our comfort zone. Following an issue with the Muscadet appellation certification, the wines are now labeled as Vin de France.

Review by Mr. GILLES D. Published on 12/25/2025

The elegant presentation sets the tone: a clean, direct attack, followed by a refined and well-defined mid-palate, marked by remarkable liveliness with citrusy and chalky notes that blend into an admirable medium-bodied richness. The freshness persists right through to a bold finish, thanks to a beautifully balanced salinity. What a delight for Christmas Eve, paired with turbot in Nantes-style beurre blanc and chive-flavored mashed potatoes! Rating = 4 4.
