Bettane & Desseauve
Rated estate (2020 guide): 3 stars (High-quality production, setting the standard in its sector)
About the estate:
Fabrice Gasnier, the new president of the Chinon winegrowers’ association, has been running this 31-hectare family estate in Cravant-les-Côteaux—a mecca for clay-limestone soils—using biodynamic methods since 2006. The Graves opens the red wine range with surprising mineral depth; L’Ancienne goes further in terms of power, and the Vieilles Vignes cuvée continues this progression with more refined tannins. The Queue de Poêlon cuvée, aged in concrete tanks made by the producer himself, offers a rare richness. The two vineyard plots, with vines ranging from 70 to 75 years old, are used in the signature cru, designed for long-term aging. Priced from 7 to 19 euros, this offers value for money that is hard to beat in the region.

Wine rated 14.5/20 (2017 vintage) (Good wine)
Rated estate (2021 guide) Selected (Please note that this guide is a ranking, and as such, all the estates listed here—even those without a star—represent, in our view, the pinnacle of French winemaking.)
About the estate:
For four generations, the Gasnier family has been running this estate in Cravant-les-Coteaux. Fabrice tends to 29 hectares of vineyards, all planted on light soils. In his wines, we find the floral notes and delicate textures—never overly long, yet so easy to drink—that have made the Chinons of Rabelais legendary. Queue du Poëlon, which showcases a plot of 60-year-old vines, is aged in concrete tanks.

Already known for the quality of his wines, this winemaker did not disappoint me: this vintage has great aging potential.

A very good product. It would benefit from a little aging.
