Chinon
Chinon: A Region Dedicated to Quality
The castle of Chinon, which overlooks the Vienne River, was the residence of many kings and princes, from the Plantagenets to Richelieu. In 1429, Charles VII received Joan of Arc there, who had come to convince him to reconquer the Kingdom of France. Also the birthplace of Rabelais, history and its romanticized versions are etched into the architecture and landscape of Chinon, making it a place of pilgrimage (more bacchanalian than literary) and a site with Renaissance charm highly prized by tourists. The appellation covers 18 communes, on both sides of the Vienne River up to its confluence with the Loire. The terroir was officially recognized by the Chinon AOC under the decree of July 31, 1937.The vineyards of the Chinon wine appellation cover an area of 2,400 hectares, producing 110,000 hectoliters of red, white, and rosé wine annually. In Chinon, there are three main types of soil. First, the alluvial terraces (both ancient and recent) along the banks of the Vienne River, composed of gravel and sand; then the limestone hillsides and knolls of the Turonian period (yellow tuffeau) situated along the riverbanks; and finally the plateaus and knolls consisting mainly of flint-rich clay and sand (Senonian). The wide confluence of the Loire and Vienne rivers serves as a gateway to the mild Atlantic climate. The oceanic climate thus penetrates through both valleys to the farthest slopes and terraces. Oriented east-west, the hillsides benefit from a very sunny southern exposure: as in the Bourgueil region, there is a favorable microclimate that is perfectly suited to Cabernet Franc.
Chinon red wine is made almost exclusively from Cabernet Franc (or Breton), although Cabernet Sauvignon is permitted up to 10% of the blend. The white variety is made from Chenin (or Pineau de Loire). Depending on the type, Chinon wines reach maturity between 2 and 5 years or between 10 and 20 years. A high-quality wine, Chinon is perfectly represented by producers such as the Charles Joguet, Philippe Alliet, and Bernard Baudry estates.
Rosé wines, which account for 4% of Chinon’s production, are also very fruity. Chinon white wine, on the other hand, accounts for only 1% of production. Made from Chenin grapes, it can become quite interesting with age.
The Chinon AOC
Wine Red Chinon is often described as follows: it has a deep ruby color, a very fruity and aromatic bouquet, and elegant tannins on the palate. This wine pairs very well with meat, whether red or white, in a sauce or grilled. The white wine is straw-yellow in color, fairly light, and has a citrus-forward bouquet with notes of honey and quince. On the palate, it is fresh and light yet still has a certain roundness. It will pair very well with a fish dish.Chinon: Producers Who Rise to the Challenge
TheChinon AOC is a wine prized for its rich and balanced character. A few producers share the appellation in the heart of the Loire Valley and some have a good reputation.Discover, for example, the Grosbois estate and its 9 hectares of organically farmed vineyards. Its varied slopes allow the estate to produce four cuvées that are quite distinct from one another, a fine example of the range of flavors associated with red Chinon.
You can also turn with confidence to the estate of Philippe Alliet and his family. This winemaker produces wines recognized as among the finest in the region. Four vintages of red wines suitable for aging, as well as a white Chinon, are available to all enthusiasts of the genre.
Also consider Château de Coulaine, an estate that has belonged to the Bonnaventure family since 1300. It was even mentioned in the Adventures of Gargantua, written by Rabelais, a native of the region. Its history in winemaking, however, is relatively recent, and today it is surrounded by 20 hectares of vineyards. The wines produced here are certified organic. Hand-harvesting is one of the many hallmarks of quality at this estate, ensuring wines of the highest caliber.
We should also mention producer Bernard Baudry, whose vineyards span various areas within the Chinon AOC. His expertise in winemaking ensures excellent Chinon wines.
