Bettane & Desseauve
Rated estate (2020 guide) 3 stars (High-quality production, serving as a benchmark in its sector)
About the estate:
Fabrice Gasnier, the new president of the Chinon wine syndicate, has been running this 31-hectare family estate in Cravant-les-Côteaux, a prime location for clay-limestone soils, using biodynamic methods since 2006. The Graves opens the red range with astonishing mineral depth; L'Ancienne goes further in terms of power and the Vieilles Vignes cuvée continues this progression with more racy tannins. The Queue de Poêlon cuvée, aged in concrete vats made by the producer himself, offers a rare fullness. The two plots of 70- to 75-year-old vines are used in the signature cuvée, which is made for long aging. Priced between $7 and $19, these wines offer value for money that is hard to beat in the region.

Wine rating (2021 guide) 90/100 (2019 vintage)
Rated estate (2021 guide) Selected (Please note that this guide is a ranking and, as such, all the estates listed in it, even those without stars, represent, in our opinion, the excellence of French production.)
About the estate:
The Gasnier family has been running this estate in Cravant-les-Coteaux for four generations. Fabrice works 29 hectares of land, all cultivated on light soil. His wines feature the floral notes and delicate textures, never very long but so easy to drink, that have made the legendary Chinons of Rabelais so famous. Queue du Poëlon, which showcases a 60-year-old vineyard plot, is aged in concrete vats.
