"Coteau de Noiré, grown on south-facing clay-limestone soil, stands out for its aging potential and its nuanced intensity." (Bettane & Desseauve 2025). A great cuvée from the Philippe Alliet estate, Coteau de Noiré is exceptional for its balance and complexity. Beautiful minerality with noble, powerful tannins make it an excellent wine for aging.

About wine:
Coteau de Noiré, grown on south-facing clay-limestone soil, stands out for its aging potential and its nuanced intensity.
About the estate:
Now more than ever one of the leading names in the Loire region, Domaine des Alliet—Claude, Philippe, and their son Pierre—is dedicated to producing great Cabernet Franc wines. The new generation has moved away from heavy-handed aging techniques, and the wines are becoming more refined in their youth while retaining excellent aging potential. The Coteau-de-Noiré, on a south-facing clay-limestone terroir, shines with its aging potential and its nuanced intensity.

About wine:
Already in barrels, the Chinon Coteau de Noiré 2022, from a steep south-facing hillside composed of clay and limestone, is one of the most impressive and refined wines I have tasted at this address. Evoking a complex and elegant bouquet of spices, pencil lead, licorice, dark wild berries, and cedar, it is full-bodied, ample, and enveloping with a textured attack, a layered and fleshy fruit core structured around soft, powdery tannins and bright acids, ending with a long, mineral, and ethereal finish. It could evolve gracefully and more harmoniously with time in the cellar.

Rated estate (2026 guide) 2 stars (These very large estates, often blessed with fabulous terroirs, are must-haves which, thanks to their consistency and the excellence of their production, deserve a place in the cellars of discerning wine lovers).
About the estate:
The discreet Claude and Philippe Alliet created a new style in Chinon in the 1990s. Their Vieilles Vignes cuvées (gravel, 70- to 90-year-old vines, 18 months in concrete vats), L’Huisserie (upper hillside and flinty clay plateau) and, above all, Coteau de Noiré (steep south-facing clay-limestone slope) have won over Cabernet Franc lovers with their dark color and incredible density. But there is no set formula at Philippe Alliet, a fine taster and outstanding winemaker, supported since 2005 by his son Pierre, who helps him craft wines that are ever deeper and more stylized. Since 2010, Bordeaux barrels have been replaced by 500-liter barrels and the proportion of new wood has been greatly reduced.
