“Full-bodied and expansive, the 2012 Vieilles Vignes offers a restrained yet vigorous profile and is fairly early to drink. ” (The Guide to the Best Wines of France 2015 - RVF). A rich wine with intense flavors, featuring beautiful concentration and a delightful expression of its grape variety. A red that reveals great maturity, with an elegant and indulgent profile and very nice tannins. Best enjoyed with beef stew, for example...

Bettane & Desseauve
Wine rated (2015 guide) 16/20 (Very good wine)
Rated estate (2026 guide): 4*Stars (Producers of the very highest quality, the pride of French viticulture)
About the wine:
This vintage produced wines that are slightly less concentrated than those of previous vintages. Extraction was limited here to emphasize the finesse of the tannins.
About the estate:
Now more than ever, the Domaine des Alliet—Claude, Philippe, and their son Pierre—stands as one of the Loire Valley’s leading estates, dedicated to the art of crafting great Cabernet Franc wines. The new generation has moved away from overly assertive aging styles, and the wines are gaining in refinement while still young, yet retain great structure over time. The Coteau-de-Noiré, grown on a south-facing clay-limestone terroir, stands out for its aging potential and its nuanced intensity.
RVF - La Revue du Vin de France / Guide des Meilleurs Vins de France
Wine rated (2015 guide) 16/20 (Very good wine)
Rated estate (2026 guide): 2*Stars (These exceptional estates, often boasting fabulous terroirs, are must-haves that, thanks to the consistency and excellence of their wines, deserve a place in the cellars of discerning wine lovers)
About the wine:
Full-bodied and rich, the 2012 Vieilles Vignes offers a restrained yet vigorous profile and is ready to drink relatively early.
About the estate:
The unassuming Claude and Philippe Alliet pioneered a new style in Chinon in the 1990s. Their “Vieilles Vignes” wines (gravel soils, 70- to 90-year-old vines, aged 18 months in concrete tanks), L’Huisserie (upper hillside and flint-clay plateau), and especially Coteau de Noiré (a steep, south-facing clay-limestone slope), have captivated Cabernet Franc enthusiasts with their deep color and incredible density. But there is no set formula for Philippe Alliet, a discerning taster and outstanding winemaker, supported since 2005 by his son, Pierre, who helps him craft wines that are ever deeper and more refined. Starting in 2010, Bordeaux barrels were phased out in favor of 500-liter casks, and the proportion of new oak was significantly reduced.

2012, tasted in 2015: The wine is still closed but shows great potential. Keep for a few years.

I've been buying Philippe Alliet's Chinons for 10 years, and I've never been disappointed. The "Vieilles Vignes" cuvée strikes the perfect balance between the estate cuvée (which is fruit-forward) and the behemoth "Coteaux de Noiré": it's fruity and concentrated—powerful yet refined. And it's already very good. A model Chinon.
