Bettane & Desseauve

“Full-bodied and expansive, the 2012 Vieilles Vignes offers a restrained yet vigorous profile, with good early development. ” (The Guide to the Best Wines of France 2015 - RVF). A rich wine, intense in flavor, with beautiful concentration and a delightful expression of its grape variety. A red that reveals great maturity, with an elegant and indulgent profile and very fine tannins. Perfect for pairing with beef stew, for example...

Wine rated (2015 guide) 16/20 (Very good wine)

Rated estate (2026 guide) 4*Stars (Producers of the very highest quality, the pride of French viticulture)

About the wine:

This vintage produced wines that are slightly less concentrated than previous vintages. Extraction was kept to a minimum here in order to achieve refined tannins.

About the estate:

Now more than ever a leading name in the Loire Valley, Domaine des Alliet—Claude, Philippe, and their son Pierre—is dedicated to crafting great Cabernet Franc wines. The new generation has moved away from overly assertive aging styles, and the wines have gained refinement in their youth while retaining excellent aging potential. The Coteau-de-Noiré, grown on south-facing clay-limestone soil, shines for its aging potential and its nuanced intensity.

Wine rated (2015 guide) 16/20 (Very good wine)

Rated estate (2026 guide) 2*Stars (These exceptional estates, often boasting fabulous terroirs, are must-haves that, thanks to the consistency and excellence of their wines, deserve a place in the cellars of discerning wine lovers)

About the wine:

Full-bodied and rich, the 2012 Vieilles Vignes offers a restrained yet vigorous profile and is relatively early to drink.

About the estate:

The unassuming Claude and Philippe Alliet pioneered a new style in Chinon in the 1990s. Their Vieilles Vignes cuvées (gravel soils, vines aged 70 to 90 years, aged 18 months in concrete tanks), L’Huisserie (upper hillside and flint-clay plateau), and above all Coteau de Noiré (steep south-facing clay-limestone slope), have captivated Cabernet Franc enthusiasts with their deep color and incredible density. But there is no set formula at Philippe Alliet, a refined taster and outstanding winemaker, supported by his son, Pierre, since 2005, who helps him craft wines that are ever deeper and more refined. Starting in 2010, Bordeaux barrels were phased out in favor of 500-liter casks, and the proportion of new oak was significantly reduced.

2012, tasted in 2015: The wine is still closed but shows great potential. Keep for a few years.

I’ve been buying Philippe Alliet’s Chinons for 10 years, and I’ve never been disappointed. The “Vieilles Vignes” cuvée strikes the perfect balance between the estate’s standard cuvée (which is fruit-forward) and the massive “Coteaux de Noiré”: it’s fruity and concentrated, powerful yet refined. And it’s already excellent. A model Chinon.
