Bettane & Desseauve

“Crisp, rich, with lovely notes of red fruit and a delicately smoky finish . Good value for money.” (The Bettane & Desseauve Guide to French Wines 2017) You can sense the influence of the granite soils, which lend the wine a mineral touch. A young, crisp wine, perfect for the summer season.

Rated wine (2017 guide) 15.5/20 + Editor's Choice (Excellent wine)

Rated estate (2026 guide) 3*Stars (High-quality production, setting the standard in its sector)

About the wine:

Crisp, rich, with lovely notes of red berries and a delicately smoky finish. Good value for the price.

About the estate:

Stéphane Sérol is steering his estate toward excellence. The 34 hectares of vineyards showcase the Gamay grape, which truly comes into its own here on the granite and porphyry soils. Combined with meticulous, biodynamic viticulture, this estate stands out for its carefully crafted, hand-harvested wines. The various vintages offer a fresh structure and rich flavor, particularly the Les-Millerands cuvée, which is well worth aging in the cellar. A reliable source of great, enjoyable wines.

Guide Hachette des vins

Rated estate (2026 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer’s wines are regularly recognized by the guide)

About the estate:

A talented champion of the local vineyard’s revival, Stéphane Sérol took over this 37-hectare estate (certified organic and biodynamic) in 1998. The estate dates back to 1700, and his father, Robert, first brought it to prominence in 1971 by selling wine directly to consumers by the bottle. A (very) reliable choice from the Côte Roannaise.

Wine rated (2017 guide) 15,5/20 (Good wine)

Rated estate (2026 guide) 2*Stars (These exceptional estates, often boasting fabulous terroirs, are must-haves that, thanks to the consistency and excellence of their wines, deserve a place in the cellars of discerning wine lovers)

About the estate:

Carine and Stéphane Sérol have never showcased Gamay Saint-Romain and the Côte Roannaise quite like this. Grown on sandy and granite soils at elevations ranging from 380 to 520 meters, their reds express the grape variety’s delicate smoky, floral, and airy character. Grown in high-density vineyards (8,000 to 10,000 vines per hectare), the grapes are partially or even completely destemmed before being gently vinified. The progress made over the past decade has been remarkable, and the wines have never better captured the identity of their terroirs. Note the added refinement in the whites.

A beautiful wine, appealing yet somewhat polarizing due to its pronounced primary aromas. Pairs well with charcuterie.

A fresh and elegant wine that benefits from being decanted for a good hour before revealing its fruity aromas, subtly enhanced by delightful animal and minty notes. Excellent in its category.
