Slopes of the Aubance

Between the river and its tributaries: The rich wine-growing heritage of the Aubance hillsides

Between Anjou and the Slopes of the Layon and the Cabernet d'Anjou, the name Slopes of the Aubance holds its own thanks to its terroir and the expertise of the winemakers who produce exceptional wines.

The Coteaux de l'Aubance wine region has held AOC status since 1950. It covers an area of approximately 200 hectares south of Angers on the left bank of the Loire River. The vineyards are situated on breezy, well-exposed hillsides, ideal for the grapes to ripen fully. Coteaux de l'Aubance wines are made exclusively from Chenin Blanc (Pineau de Loire).

With a beautiful golden yellow color and green highlights, the sweet white wine from the Slopes of the Aubance offers a fine balance between its rich aromas and the freshness imparted by the minerality of its terroir. These qualities are best appreciated by tasting the wines offered by the Montgilet Estate.

Wines that reflect the terroir

Set against a backdrop of dark-colored, shallow shale soils through which the Aubance stream winds, the "White King" is called Chenin also known as Pineau de la Loire. Coteaux de l'Aubance is a sweet white wine fromControlled Designation of Origin Produced south of Angers. It is made through successive passes, which involve returning to the same plot multiple times to harvest "roasted" grapes—that is, those affected by noble rot. The grapes are harvested by hand to ensure a precise and meticulous selection of each cluster, resulting in a superior wine. Located on the left bank of the Loire, the vineyards of the Coteaux de l’Aubance appellation enjoy an ideal climate, with light morning mists and well-exposed, warm, and sunny plateaus, conducive to the development of Botrytis cinerea (noble rot), which enriches the grapes with sugar and aromas, reduces acidity, and facilitates the harvest at overripening, which gives wines from the appellation Slopes of the Aubance delicacy, refinement, and elegance.

An elegant wine with character

Characterized by distinct yet subtle terroir notes, this wine’s bouquet is delicately scented with white fruit aromas, blending hints of honey, candied fruit, and quince. Its golden yellow color with amber highlights reveals a wine of great elegance, delicate and smooth. Its flavors strike the perfect balance between richness, freshness, character, and finesse. Rich in aromatic nuances, this wine is an exceptional age-worthy wine. (5 to 20 years old, with no upper limit for older vintages) The Montgilet estate invites you to taste still white wines from the Coteaux de l’Aubance appellation, priced between 11 and 15 euros. These artisan winemakers bring all their expertise and experience to crafting a high-quality sweet wine. The harvest for this cuvée, which is fermented and aged in barrels, involves five rounds of sorting spread out until the end of November. Best served between 10° and 12° C, these wines are wonderful as an aperitif and pair with finesse and indulgence with foie gras and toasted gingerbread. It releases all its aromatic qualities when paired with a tart featuring slightly tart raspberries.
