Bettane & Desseauve
Wine rated (2019 guide) 14,5/20 (Good wine)
Rated estate (2020 guide): 2 stars (A solid, recommendable wine, though slightly more consistent and uniform than the previous vintage)
About the estate:
Located on the Séoules hill, on the outskirts of Nice at an altitude of nearly 300 meters, the terraced vineyard benefits from sea mist that tempers the summer heat. After producing 47 vintages and establishing the renown and reputation of the Bellet appellation, Ghislain de Charnacé sold his 12-hectare vineyard in 2014 to the real estate management company La Française REM (which owns other vineyards). Considerable resources have been invested in restructuring the vineyards, under the leadership, since the summer of 2018, of Jean de Laître, a talented winemaking expert who is also active in the Bordeaux region. A highly functional winery at the foot of the old chapel now allows for winemaking that is closely attuned to the terroir. A new style is emerging, with a reorganization of the portfolio into three tiers (entry-level wines, terroir wines, and exceptional “agnès” cuvées), promising a bright future for this historic estate. The latest vintages reflect this positive shift.

An exceptional and unique wine unlike anything else out there. Very pleasant, with a lovely aroma and an inimitable flavor thanks to a very distinctive grape variety.

Too much alcohol, too round—not enough freshness or fruit. A disappointment, but it will suit those who add an ice cube.

A surprising wine. Fruity and peppery on the nose. A disconcerting bitterness; tight, gripping on the palate, with grapefruit notes. Good length. Perfect in the summer with cold appetizers, hot or cold fish. Pairs well with white meat, but not red meat. Out of the ordinary—I’ll definitely buy it again.
