At his new facilities in the heart of Tain, Jacques Grange has a magnificent, state-of-the-art facility at his disposal. He is assisted by Marco Beckmann, an Italian oenologist and expert taster. The upcoming vintages look promising. In Hermitage, the new cuvée from the Grandes Vignes at the top of the hill brings this underutilized terroir into the spotlight.

Founded in 1835, the house has been owned by Champagne Deutz (Roederer Group) since 1977. Under the leadership of Fabrice Rosset and his technical director, Jacques Grange, it owns 30 hectares of vineyards in the northern appellations, supplemented by purchased grapes; the southern range is sourced from its négociant-éleveur division.

About the wine:

Unveiling aromas of black cherries, peonies, flowers, and black wild berries, the 2022 Gigondas Les Reinages is already showing itself at its best. It offers a medium-bodied to full-bodied palate that is dense and fleshy, with a harmonious structure and velvety tannins at perfect maturity, culminating in a long, mineral, and taut finish. This blend, composed of 80% Grenache Noir and 20% Syrah, shows great promise.

About the estate:

Part of the Deutz Champagne house since 1977—which is itself part of the Louis Roederer Group—Delas is a reputable winery. Priority has been given to vineyards with extensive mass-selection plantings. The house cultivates 30 hectares of its own vineyards, including 10 hectares in prime locations in Hermitage: 8 in Les Bessards and 2 in L’Ermite. The house rounds out its portfolio by purchasing must or grapes. We admit to being somewhat cautious at times regarding the overly pronounced aging profiles of its most prestigious cuvées, which, in our opinion, would benefit from being crafted to better highlight the fruit and freshness. It’s worth noting that, since 2019, the winery has had a brand-new winemaking and reception facility in Tain.

About the wine:

It would be hard not to appreciate this beautifully balanced Gigondas. It has a wonderful nose of fresh plums, with subtle earthy notes and a herbaceous freshness. On the palate, it is fairly concentrated, medium-bodied to full-bodied, with a wonderful interplay between deep fruit aromas and just enough acidity to make the finish lively, where the fine tannins unfold gently.
