Domaine Gauby - Les Calcinaires 2011
Note: RVF 16/20
“As a red, the 2011 Calcinaires deserves a brief aeration but serves as a perfect introduction to the Gauby style: fresh, smooth, full-bodied, and supple, it is immediately mouth-watering and highly approachable.” (Le Guide des Meilleurs Vins de France 2013 - RVF). A must-try, without a doubt!

RVF - La Revue du Vin de France / Guide des Meilleurs Vins de France
Rated estate (2024 guide) 3*Stars (These represent the pinnacle of French winemaking. The finest terroirs cultivated by the greatest winemakers. Tasting their wine is always a magical experience)
About the estate:
Since his early days in the mid-1980s, Gérard Gauby has been an inspiring, demanding, and passionate winemaker. His vines are cultivated with love and respect for the plants and the ecosystem. He has revealed to the world the complexity and potential of the Calce terroir, with its limestone and iron-rich schist soils. The winemaker has also successfully evolved his style toward wines that are less heavily aged, purer, and more airy. Alongside his son, he continues this quest, and his vintages are gaining in expression and richness. The whites are of great integrity, with superb longevity and masterfully controlled aging. The reds are pure and deep. The 2021 vintages are approaching the pinnacle of excellence in both styles.

We opened a bottle at a friend's house, but it was a huge disappointment. The wine stings the tongue like a sparkling wine. Undrinkable... Too bad. I don't dare open the other two bottles I have. I doubt this sharpness will improve.

What a disappointment for me, a die-hard Gauby fan! The wine was practically undrinkable—fragrant on the nose but with a strange sensation that was confirmed on the palate, quickly giving way to a taste that was part sharp, part fizzy. Being naturally optimistic, I opened a second bottle—same result. It just goes to show that even great winemakers can have their off days, especially when, like Mr. Gauby, they are committed to producing a product that is as natural as possible.

It's good, but there are better wines in this price range in the region. The same goes for their red.

Interesting aromas, but unfortunately it stings the tongue like a cheap Beaujolais Nouveau. Undrinkable... much to my regret. P.S. It had been aged for a year in a climate-controlled cellar!!! Fortunately, 1 jour1vin refunded my purchase!
