Domaine Gauby - Côtes Catalanes Muntada 2011

“'an extraordinary brilliance' (RVF)”
"The 2011 Côtes du Roussillon Villages Muntada offers deep, complex notes of wild herbs, blackcurrant, tar, licorice, sage, and leather on the nose. There’s no artifice here; what you get is the pure essence of Roussillon. Aged for 30 months in a combination of large and small barrels, it is full-bodied and rich, still very concentrated and taut, with a firm structure. It will benefit from 2 to 3 years of bottle aging to round out, and will have a longevity of more than 20 years, if not more. ” (Wine Advocate 2014) • Please note: limited quantities available

Wine rated (2014 guide) 19/20 (Exceptional wine)
Rated estate (2024 guide) 3*Stars (These represent the pinnacle of French winemaking. The finest terroirs cultivated by the greatest winemakers. Tasting their wine is always a magical experience)
About the wine:
Muntada 2011 takes its floral character a step further, carried by a myriad of small, flavorful tannins, whose fleshy, lively vitality unleashes an extraordinary vibrancy.
About the estate:
Since his early days in the mid-1980s, Gérard Gauby has been an inspiring, demanding, and passionate winemaker. His vines are cultivated with love and respect for the plants and the ecosystem. He has revealed to the world the complexity and potential of the Calce terroir, with its limestone and iron-rich schist soils. The winemaker has also successfully evolved his style toward wines that are less heavily aged, purer, and more airy. Alongside his son, he continues this quest, and his wines are gaining in expression and richness. The whites are of great integrity, with superb longevity and masterfully controlled aging. The reds are pure and deep. The 2021 vintage reaches new heights in both styles.

I was disappointed by this wine. It lacks a lot of character compared to other wines from the Roussillon region.
