Bugey Cerdon
Cerdon, or more precisely Bugey-Cerdon, is a French rosé sparkling wine produced in the Bugey region across ten municipalities around Cerdon, in the Ain department.
It is a low-alcohol rosé sparkling wine (8% ABV). It is made from Gamay and Poulsard grapes using the traditional method.
The vines are planted on mountain slopes, on steep south-east-facing hillsides that can reach up to 300 meters in elevation. About ten municipalities share a highly fragmented vineyard covering a total of 136.4 hectares: l’Abergement-de-Varey, Bohas-Meyriat-Rignat, Boyeux-Saint-Jérôme, Cerdon, Jujurieux, Mérignat, Poncin, Saint-Alban, Saint-Jean-le-Vieux, and Saint-Martin-du-Mont.
Two grape varieties are used in the production of Cerdon: Poulsard, a red variety, and Gamay. They produce sparkling rosé wines of great finesse, which, as they age, take on an onion-skin color and a delicate aroma.
It is a geographical designation within the Bugey Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC), which was promoted to AOC status by the INAO on May 28, 2009, and subsequently designated as a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) under European Union regulations.
