“The wine’s structure provides a solid backbone and a fine expression of the wild Negrette grape. A slight vegetal note, however, rounds out the profile. One to watch as it ages.” (Le Guide RVF 2022)

Wine rated 88/100

Rated estate (2020 guide): 3 stars (High-quality production, setting the standard in its sector)

About the wine:

A great success and a benchmark for the appellation, this wine showcases the full potential of the Négrette grape to produce wines with a bit more structure—quite elegant, even if it lacks the depth to compete in the top tier.

About the estate:

When he took over his father’s vineyards, Marc Penavayre wanted to evolve the style of the local wines toward more refined, more elegant products—a trend that was also evident in other villages in the Southwest during the 1980s and 1990s. This began with a greater focus on vineyard management, which has been certified organic since 2011. But it also involved rethinking the grape varieties, giving pride of place to the local favorite, Négrette, and planting white varieties that are sure to surprise. Finally, it involved a more balanced use of oak barrels. The entire range is guided by a commitment to promoting forgotten grape varieties and wines that are approachable even when young, all crafted with impeccable precision.

About the estate:

An agricultural engineer and oenologist, Marc Penavayre breathed new life into the family estate, which he took over in 1991, restructuring and expanding it. His son Thibaut joined him in 2019. The vineyard now covers 26 hectares and completed its transition to organic farming in 2012

Wine rated (2022 guide) 89/100

Rated estate (2021 guide) 1*Star (Up-and-coming stars or quality winemakers producing wines of a high standard—you won’t be disappointed when tasting the wines from these estates)

About the wine:

The wine’s structure provides a solid backbone and a fine expression of the wild Negrette grape. However, a slight vegetal note rounds out the profile. Worth keeping an eye on as it ages.

About the estate:

A driving force behind the revival of the Fronton region for over twenty years, Marc Penavayre offers a distinctive take on the local grape variety, Négrette. Certified organic since 2011 and now joined by his son Thibaut, Marc takes the quality of his grapes to new heights every year. The wines remain juicy and approachable; the cuvées—whose names are sometimes unpronounceable without the help of an Occitan dictionary—now define Fronton’s identity. Constantly evolving and produced without synthetic inputs, the range allows everyone to find a wine that matches their tasting style. This year, we are awarding the estate its first star.
