Comté Tolosan
Comte Tolosan IGP wine
The Comté Tolosan PGI is a regional PGI that encompasses a dozen departments in southwestern France. The Comté Tolosan PGI follows the same specifications as the Vin de Pays du Comté Tolosan appellation, which was first recognized in 1982. The Comté Tolosan PGI may be supplemented by one of the following specific appellations: “Bigorre,” “Coteaux et Terrasses de Montauban,” “Pyrénées-Atlantiques,” “Tarn-et-Garonne,” “Haute-Garonne,” or “Cantal.”
The Comté Tolosan Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) is reserved for still red, rosé, and white wines; quality red, rosé, and white sparkling wines; and white wines made from overripe grapes. Most of the vineyards are located on the Tertiary sedimentary soils of the Aquitaine Basin and on the ancient alluvial deposits of the Quaternary terraces formed by the river system. The climate of the Comté Tolosan PGI is temperate oceanic, characterized by mild, rainy winters and cool, relatively humid summers. This influence diminishes toward the east, where the region is subject to the influence of the Mediterranean climate. The grape varieties used for Comté Tolosan wines include all those authorized for winemaking. However, the main grape varieties used are Cabernet Sauvignon, Duras, Fer Servadou, Cot, Negrette, Syrah, and Tannat for red wines. The white wines of the Comté Tolosan PGI, on the other hand, use Chardonnay, Colombard, Muscadelle, Petit Manseng, Sémillon, and Uni Blanc.
Of course, since the Comté Tolosan PGI covers a vast region, the diversity of wines within this appellation is immense. However, the wines produced by Château Plaisance and Domaine Alain Brumont stand out.
History of the Comte Tolosan IGP Vineyards

The Terroir of the Comte Tolosan PGI
The vast vineyard of the Comte Tolosan IGP appellation is characterized by its unique soils, which are distinct from those of other IGPs. The vineyards producing Comte Tolosan wines are composed of sedimentary soils. The vineyard, which extends significantly across several departments, is bordered by the well-known mountains and massifs of the Pyrenees, but also stretches across the Massif Central and borders the Atlantic Ocean, passing through the upper Garonne basin. The lands of Aquitaine and the Pyrenees enjoy a temperate, oceanic climate. Winters here are mild and rainy, which promotes healthy vine growth, followed by a cool, humid summer.
The characteristics of Comte Tolosan IGP wines
The grape varieties of the IP Comte Tolosan region include a variety of wines, including reds, rosés, and whites. The white wines (Chardonnay, Sémillon, Muscadelle), produced largely in the Gers department, offer floral and fruity flavors. The red and rosé wines (Cabernet Sauvignon, Duras, Negrette), on the other hand, have a more fruity bouquet. The rosés are particularly fruity and offer a very pleasant sensation of freshness on the palate.
Wine Tasting
Comte Tolosan red wines pair wonderfully with meat or dishes like cassoulet or truffade. The rosés go very well with charcuterie, such as rillettes. The white wines are perfect for enjoying with cheeses like Rocamadour but can also be enjoyed with vegetables.
