“It’s impressive to see how slowly the Petit Courbu ages. Still rich in fruit, this wine is just beginning to mature, with notes of bitter almonds rounding out the fruit and acidity. The wine is now ready to drink.” (Wine Enthusiast 2022). Enjoy it with foie gras or a Roquefort soufflé...

Wine rated (2023 guide) 90/100

Rated Estate (2023 Guide) Selected (Please note that this guide is a ranking, and as such, all the estates listed here—even those without a star—represent, in our view, the pinnacle of French winemaking.)

About the estate:

Alain Brumont has forged his own distinctive style, sending wines from Madiran across the globe under the Château Montus label, which he acquired in 1980. Often bucking conventional wisdom, Brumont’s vintages reflect his great freedom in interpreting terroirs with yellow and red clay subsoils, which vary in composition from 20% to 40%. Tannat is featured in the château’s three cuvées—Prestige, XL, Montus, and La Tyre—and undoubtedly delivers the most spectacular profile of this challenging Pyrenean grape.
