"[...] The nose of the 2020 Schimberg Pinot Gris is subtle and beautifully defined, with lively acidity. It comes from a mass selection of small berries, which accounts for the concentration of acidity. On the finish, there is a lovely roundness of pear that complements the lemony brightness so unusual for Pinot Gris. Magnificent. ” (Vinous 2023)

Rated estate (2023 guide) 3*Stars (High-quality production, setting the standard in its sector)

About the estate:

An iconic estate in Bergholtz for two generations now. The 18 hectares of biodynamic vineyards are the result of the partnership between Jean Dirler and Ludivine Cadé. Within the range, the fine terroirs of Saering, Kitterlé, Kessler, and especially Spiegel offer great aging potential, allowing the slight residual sugars to integrate fully.

Wine rated (2023 guide) 92/100

Rated estate (2025 guide) 3*Stars (These represent the pinnacle of French winemaking. The finest terroirs cultivated by the greatest winemakers. Tasting their wine is always a magical experience)

About the wine:

Precise, juicy, and rich yet slender and taut, the Schimberg Pinot Gris has a lovely structure and a rather vibrant finish.

About the estate:

Jean Dirler and his wife Ludivine, sensitive and seasoned winemakers, expertly steer this estate founded in 1871, which has been passed down from father to son for five generations and has been cultivated biodynamically since 1998. Regardless of the grape variety, the precision of the wines, their density, and ripeness have never been more accomplished: an impressive range of great dry white wines culminates in the magnificent expressions of the Spiegel, Saering, Kessler, and Kitterlé grands crus, which are an absolute must-try and are now named after the four elements (fire, air, earth, water). This estate offers a remarkable welcome, and many wines are available in older vintages. The exceptional quality of the entire range in recent vintages has earned it a third star this year.

About the wine:

Schimberg is a site named after the German word "schimmern," meaning "to shimmer," because it catches the last rays of evening light. The soil consists of volcanic grauwacke and clay. The nose of the 2020 Pinot Gris Schimberg is subtle and beautifully defined with lively acidity. It comes from a mass selection of small berries, which explains the concentration of acidity. On the finish, there is a lovely roundness of pear that complements the lemony brightness so unusual for Pinot Gris. Magnificent (dry)
