Rating: Robert Parker 94/100, Bettane & Desseauve 19.5/20
“A very accomplished wine, with notes of ripe fruit and smoke on the nose; rich on the palate at first, before developing a full-bodied, deep, and very briny character, finishing with a long aftertaste. The epitome of the very great whites produced in the best vintages, the 2005 Clos Sainte-Hune is sure to become legendary.” (Le Grand Guide des Vins de France 2011 – Bettane & Desseauve). This one-hectare, 67-are plot, located in the heart of the Rosacker Grand Cru in the Hunawihr appellation, has belonged to the Trimbach family for over 200 years. An exceptional terroir planted exclusively with Riesling that produces this legendary wine in very limited quantities. Limited supply!

Rated estate (2022 guide): 4* Stars (Producers of the very highest quality, the pride of French viticulture)

About the estate:

The Ribeauvillé winery is slowly evolving to keep pace with the times. After shifting its focus to grand cru wines, Trimbach is in the process of converting to organic farming (certification expected in 2023). This transition will require the involvement of its grape and wine suppliers. Here, Riesling reigns supreme (55% of production). The terroirs are well-suited: marl-limestone (Geisberg, Mandelberg, Clos-Saint-Hune in Rosacker) or granite (Schlossberg, Brand). The Frédéric-Émile cuvée blends the Osterberg and Geisberg grands crus. The 2017 and 2019 vintages will go down in history.

Rated estate (2023 guide) 2*Stars (These exceptional estates, often blessed with fabulous terroirs, are must-haves that, thanks to the consistency and excellence of their wines, deserve a place in the cellars of discerning wine lovers)

About the estate:

A must-visit winery that stands proudly in the beautiful town of the minstrels, Trimbach delights wine lovers with its legendary Frédéric-Émile and Clos Sainte-Hune vintages. Depending on the vintage, Pierre Trimbach vinifies Riesling in a vertical style, always dry. His brother Jean oversees global sales. They are now supported by the new generation: Anne and Frédérique (Pierre’s daughters) and Pauline and Julien (Jean’s children). The family vinifies nearly 60 hectares of estate-grown grapes and about 100 hectares of purchased grapes. Certain grand cru wines have been designated as such since 2009 and are directly allocated in small quantities by Jean Trimbach to the world’s finest restaurants. The estate undeniably contributes to the promotion of Alsace wines with internationally renowned cuvées, while also producing entry-level wines of consistent quality. The range of Pinot Noirs still has room for improvement.

An excellent Riesling, both crisp and rich. The price, however, is unreasonable and not justified.
