Valentin Zusslin - Riesling Bollenberg 2014

“The 2014 Bollenberg Riesling displays ripe, concentrated stone fruit aromas within a spicy, fresh, and smoky bouquet of crushed rock. Full-bodied, round, and creamy, it is a powerful and intense Riesling, yet also pure, elegant, and refined, with lively acidity and beautiful mineral tension. The finish is long and powerful, but also tannic and a bit closed off at the moment.” (Wine Advocate 2017 - Robert Parker)

About the estate:
The work of Jean-Paul and Marie Zusslin, who carry on the family winemaking tradition dating back to 1691, has been exemplary for several years now. Based in Orschwihr, on a beautiful vineyard, they form a passionate, charismatic duo dedicated to a job well done. And they’re taking on more and more projects: designing a new bottle, installing dozens of beehives and birdhouses across their vineyards...Each has their role: Marie handles marketing, while Jean-Paul works in the vineyards and the cellar. Biodynamic viticulture since 1997, meticulous winemaking, and precise aging summarize the work of this leading estate, where a plot-by-plot approach is omnipresent, even in the crémants. The excellence of the range suggests a rise in our rankings!

A wine with a lovely pale yellow color, sparkling in the glass. The nose offers notes of wet rock, with subtle hints of lemon and flowers. This Riesling shows good balance, with the palate dominated by minerality and white fruit. The whole is executed with finesse and distinction. The acidity on the attack is very moderate, giving way to a smooth, rounded body. Good length, but it lacks the liveliness to be a true Riesling. My rating is reduced by one point.
