“The aromas of fresh green apple have a pleasant earthy touch. On the palate, this green apple freshness is completely enveloped by creamy, expressive notes of yeast, earth, and cream. Its wonderful freshness gives it a light, airy quality. The finish is perfectly clean, leaving you wanting to come back for more.” (Wine Enthusiast 2018) Fresh Organic Bubbles Organic

Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Rated estate (2020 guide): 2 stars (A solid, recommendable wine, though slightly more consistent and uniform than the previous vintage)

About the estate:

The Rieflés—Jean-Claude and his sons Thomas and Paul—significantly expanded their vineyard when they acquired Seppi Landmann’s plots; their vines now stretch from Pfaffenheim to Soultzmatt, at the far end of the Noble Valley. The viticulture is meticulously managed, with a deep focus on soil conservation, and this has been evident in the tasting of their wines for several vintages now. Especially since Jean-Claude Rieflé has moved away from his experiments with natural wines, which had more than intrigued us a few years ago. Their terroir-driven wines express a gastronomic salinity.

Rated estate (2020 guide) Selected (Please note that this guide is a ranking, and as such, all the estates listed here—even those without a star—represent, in our view, the pinnacle of French winemaking.)

About the estate:

For the Rieflés, it’s a family affair: the first winemaker in the family appeared as early as 1830. Today, Thomas tends the vines, Paul handles sales, and Jean-Claude, the father, makes the wine. But it is their daily collaboration that drives the estate forward. The 2011 vintage, marked by the acquisition of the famous Seppi Landmann estate, coincides with the start of a winemaking approach seeking greater purity: more body and texture, but without the residual sugars, and a slightly longer aging on fine lees. New packaging also promises greater clarity in the range offered. Finally, note the entry-level wines by type, which may be blends: L'Éclat, a dry wine; L'Aplomb, round and full-bodied; and the aromatic L'Arabesque. L'Étoffe in red.

Let it age for a few months. Not very impressive upon opening (little aroma, flat on the palate), but better the next day.
