Made from late-harvest grapes, In Extremis is a sweet wine crafted in the Austrian tradition: the pomace is steeped in that year’s new white wine, which dissolves the remaining sugars. The pomace is pressed again. This expertise yields a wine with notes of dried fruit and a whole new level of complexity in the expression of the botrytized “Chardon Né.”

Rated estate (2021 guide): 3 stars (High-quality production, setting the standard in its sector)

About the estate:

Based in the small village of Charnay, Jean-Paul Brun is renowned throughout the region for his magnificent white wines, which almost make us forget his delicious Beaujolais—such as the Buissy, whose bouquet should serve as a benchmark for all Beaujolais producers. Cultivating 48 hectares across 6 different crus, Jean-Paul Brun has demonstrated year after year for nearly 30 years that he is a master winemaker! In a Burgundian style, where Gamay takes on the character of Pinot (or, if you prefer, Pinot that “Gamay-izes”), he crafts the aromas and refines the palate with delicacy, sometimes in oak, without ever seeking power. The 2017 vintage, more substantial than 2016, is a success for Jean-Paul Brun, particularly the luminous whites and a Buissy-l'Ancien that is as exceptional as ever.

Rated Estate (2023 Guide) 2*Stars (These exceptional estates, often boasting fabulous terroirs, are must-haves that, thanks to the consistency and excellence of their wines, deserve a place in the cellars of discerning wine lovers)

About the estate:

From the sun-drenched region of the Pierres Dorées, Jean-Paul Brun—one of the pioneers of the Beaujolais renaissance—has brought renown to his region, from young wines to the renowned crus he has patiently acquired through his work in the southern Beaujolais. Here, the identity of the terroirs is as strong as the drinkability of the wines, in which one can sense the winemaker’s velvety touch. Proof that it is possible to produce wines in significant volumes while maintaining high quality. Whether white, red, or sparkling, the wine lover’s delight is almost always guaranteed, as is the consistency of the wines and the winemaker’s personal, flavorful interpretation of the terroirs. He has recently been joined by Tristan Larsen to assist him.

This wine is good but a bit flat. I'll revisit it in a few years to form a new opinion.
